Yeah sounds good. Just be mindful that if you go through deep water you may ruin your UHF. But that's a bit extreme.

Yeah, I agree. It's not a major problem. But the first time I went out with some mates the first vehicle went through some water and it looked very shallow. It was an older land cruiser and had a small lift on it. The water got so deep and filled everything. Even he's mrs handbag with iPods and mobile phones in it. After we pulled him out he had to dry out he's carpet with a hair drier and replace the expenses. So unless you are made of money going through water could cost you a pretty penny, not to mention losing communication between other vehicles. If you are heading somewhere and you flood your cabin and you lose UHF communication it's going to be a lonely drive and very unorganized.

I don't like most roof consoles; they all seem to be too big.
Maybe it's just coz I am tall?!?

That outback console looks boss however, I'm not a fan of that gay drop box it is absolutely a useless bit for space... Do u find it's in ur face at all I'm 6'3 by the way so I'm a little scared of not like it and they isn't exactly cheap! Also seriously what the hell do u put in that shitty drop down box?

i ended up getting mine installed on the right side above the drivers footwell

that said, the auto electrician did not want to install the antenna on my tub, so it's still unusable

like they say, if you want a good job done, do it yourself

Yeah, I have done this exact same install and had the same problem with removing the slide bracket for the ashtray. There is one small screw at the back of the slide, so you have 2 options of how to remove the slide, start cutting at it with a hacksaw blade or remove the entire top half of the dash to get to the screw. I chose to remove the dash, so what I thought was going to be a quick install ended up taking me all day. Definitely worth it though, as the finished install is neat and I didn't have to put holes in the dash for a mounting bracket.

Hmm :/ frustrating, brute force an option???
entire top of dash sounds painful, do u have any photos from install that might help??

Brute force is always an option. Actually the hard plastic slide should break up nicely.
Sorry I don't have any pics from the install process, I was to busy pulling shit apart ;)
If you do pull the top half of the dash out there are a few screws that took me a while to find. One behind the centre vent control knob and also one behind the air vents at either end of the dash. You have to pop the vents covers out and they are in there.
Good luck.

Like Packateer, I have installed on the driver side, under dash, above foot-wall. This is fine if you have a unit that has controls in hand piece.

I have fabricated a small plate to match with unused existing bolt holes. Have been able to do the instal without drilling any holes in metal or plastic. Will post a link with the pictures of the install soon..

Cheers,

Hi all. Have now installed the Uniden 7760NB on the 2012 SR5. This unit has all the controls AND speaker in the hand set. Having said that, with this install, if the speaker was on the box, you would still hear it clearly...

Anyways, will go through the process first and then load the pictures. (Have obviously borrowed ideas from many sources. Couldn't come up with all this by myself...)

1) The install is on the driver side above the plastic foot-well panel. Photo's show 2 x unused bolt holes.
http://s810.photobucket.com/user/gronk1 ... ort=3&o=16
http://s810.photobucket.com/user/gronk1 ... ort=3&o=15
http://s810.photobucket.com/user/gronk1 ... ort=3&o=14

2) Using cardboard (more robust that paper when working around all the wires in a difficult spot), make a template of the mounting plate that will fit and suit the unit to be installed.
http://s810.photobucket.com/user/gronk1 ... ort=3&o=13
http://s810.photobucket.com/user/gronk1 ... ort=3&o=12

3) Off the cardboard template make a paper template. This is used to locate the exact holes for your mounting plate bolts. Rather than guess, you can place your paper template over the bolt holes and using pressure from your fingers on the paper, the bolt holes will leave an exact impression to be transferred to your final mounting plate. (No guess work and massive holes to allow moving around to fit)
http://s810.photobucket.com/user/gronk1 ... ort=3&o=11

4) Using a mild steel plate ( mine is heavier than I would have normally used - but I had it in the shed), cut to the template shape.
(You will see I have stepped this plate up from the mounting points. This allows for the UHF mounting bracket to be attached to the plate)
http://s810.photobucket.com/user/gronk1 ... sort=3&o=7
http://s810.photobucket.com/user/gronk1 ... sort=3&o=4

5) I glued rubber to the back of the raised section of plate to prevent any vibration. Then attached the UHF mounting bracket and install in the footwell.
http://s810.photobucket.com/user/gronk1 ... sort=3&o=6

6) I have earthed the UHF to the footwell bolts. I have powered the radio through the cig lighter. That way it only runs on Aux power and no danger of running a battery flat. The Cig lighter wiring is easily accessed by removing the fuse cover and sliding the contacts off.
http://s810.photobucket.com/user/gronk1 ... sort=3&o=2

7) As for the Hand-set. I ran the extension to the center lower switch blanks. Popped 1 x blank out and VERY carefully (took about 1 hr) cut to the exact shape of the extension. Then glued the switch blank and extension together. Need to be careful with the glue as the plastic blank is made of PP (Polypropylene) and not many glues can glue this, but found the Selley's "All plastic and Toy" glue seemed to have worked.

http://s810.photobucket.com/user/gronk1 ... sort=3&o=8
http://s810.photobucket.com/user/gronk1 ... sort=3&o=0

8) As posted in another thread, used a "Clic-on" brand mounting plate for the hand-set. No need to drill any holes...

9) Ta Dah.. Up and running..
