In the mine vehicles I did we used remote mics mounted on phone brackets that bolted to the stereo and sat just over the top of the air con vents. Cable ran through under the air con vent. No holes. Bodies were tucked under center console.
Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience ;)

They're rubbish that's why. The toyo sat nav is just a stereo with big screen ha ha

I use my Garmin and have topi maps etc .... Use Garmin mapsource software to load way points in etc (very handy for google earth overlay).

+1 for the Garmin & topo maps and use the Birds Eye imagery! I have a hand held Rino (with uhf) that i use with my KTM as well as the hilux and mount it to the handle bars using RAM mounts. Best $400 odd bucks i ever spent!

I've got the RIno too (was a gift) but dont use it other than as a UHF.

I use a spare iphone with google earth , offline cached mode (no 3G) ... cache all the satellite imagery before a trip, then use it offline on the trip ... with gps active ... on ipad it's even better.

Most of the stuff i do doesnt really have tracks, and its more just about having my KMZ/KML overlay loaded in google earth and being able to suss out where dune tracks lead etc.

Fair enough. being from N/E Vic we go in the high country so I use mine for the topo tracks and it has gotten us out of the s*%t on more than one occasion mainly from swollen creeks that we couldn't cross. The UHF we use for hunting and fishing (walking the streams) they are a good bit of kit!

A mate an I bought 2 garmin rhino 650's from johnnie Appleseed website. They had 2 for the price of 1! So we couldn't resist. We have paired them together and they are quite amazing. It constly updates my mates position me shows me on my unit where he is. And having the ability to talk over UHF is priceless. I highly recommend these units to anyone who hunts, fishes, dirt bike ride or 4x4 with a mate outdoors. We are both running the garmin topo maps v4 and they are faultless! :D

This sounds freaking awesome!!! If that deal came up again(2fro1) would you say it is definitely worth it??Any negatives you have found?
I have been on the lookout for 2-way(UHF) pairs.

I would actually buy two more (for the kids as we have a small farm and they love going down to the dam out of calling distance).

As for negatives, I am yet to find any. As I said I use mine fishing, 4x4ing, hunting and on my KTM, it has been dropped, rained on, covered in mud and dust and it is still 100% ok!. Make sure you get some good maps for it.

The auto locating to a paired handset is handy. You can see where the other person (handset) is at all times on the screen.

Highly recommend it and worth EVERY cent :D

I bought a remote speaker mic for mine too truckasauras ... but it's crap ($20 ebay snot) ... still, if it worked well it'd be great ... leave the rino in your backpack / cambelak and have the lapel mic clipped to your clothing.

Used to do similiar with a uniden 5watt handhelds when we go skiing/snowboarding ... was mint being able to communicate.
Would be even more mint having the ability to whip the handset out and actually see where your mates location is (especially if he's knocked himself out into a tree somewhere!! ... which has literally happened!)

rino's arent too much more expensive than a good waterproof handheld anyway, and damn they're a solid unit.

I keep mine in my 4wd and hand it out to mates who come along for a 4wd trip and havent got a UHF.

Terrific info guys, great ideas for more usage.
Newly married and kids one day, might be a bit early for buying them one but yeah great idea.
And snowbaording, bloody fantastic idea. Will be able to tell when someone is being lazy and just drinking beer at the bar(or yes, unfortunately knocked themselves out :P).

Throw it in the wife's purse/handbag.. keep track of her at the shops ;) never hears her mobile ring.

I am assuming the ones sold at Jonnie Apples are OZ stock? ~$600 for ones is a bit steep, i'll keep an eye for deals. Particully the 2 for 1 it if ever comes up again.

The Rino units we bought from Jhonnie Appleseed were australian stock. They have stores down the east coast (Brisbane, Syd and Melb). I would imagine that they will do the 2 for 1 deal again at some stage... just keep checking the site for details! I'll post some pics of the Rino set up i have for my KTM (at some stage)

If you are fitting a remote head or remote mic UHF, you can fit the main unit in behind the switch panel to the right of the key. Once you unclip this panel you can see what you are doing.

You just need to drill a hole in your radio bracket and bolt the bracket into a factory threaded nut on the right hand 'A' Pillar. Once mounted you can mount the head/mic wherever you want.

You get plenty of sound from the original speaker and is easy to get to if you need to(Nice and high off the floor to).
