I'm sure I've seen it on here before somewhere, but I can't seem to find it now. Where are people buying these mounts that screw to the head unit and save drilling into the dashboard?

Do a search for this. I sourced mine from Wagner.

Would love to know, though, how people got it on...as far as I could tell last time I had the head unit out, it'd be a bastard of a time trying to get the fascia back on behind the mount.

Which new UHF? Where did you mount yours?

Postby TBJ on Tue, 16 Oct 2018 10:42 +0000

I'm wanting to put a UHF in my 2012 SR5 Hilux, I was thinking about mounting mine under the dash and getting a unit with controls on the hand unit, but where did you guys mount yours? I was also contemplating a roof console what do you guys think of them? Then I also have no idea about which unit to buy iCOM, GME, Uniden? What about these GME XRS Connect like the XRS-330C or XRS-370C or the now discontinued TX3345 or TX3540S? or the Single DIN TX4500S? what about the iCOM's or Uniden's? I'm upgrading from my GME TX665 handheld of which will now become my secondary so this will be my first built in UHF and also my first higher end UHF.
Also I've been told to get the RFI aerials is that correct?
Also any Pictures of you guys setup would be awesome too.
thanks

Hey Mate,

my 2 cents would be, Invest in a roof console. It's one of my favourite mods that I have done inside the cab.
I paired that with the GME TX4500 and my reasoning behind that is that it has a forward facing speaker which is all mounted at a little higher then ear leave. plus you now get an extra compartment for permits, change, etc & LED lighting throughout your ute. (outback roof console)

You will never have a problem of struggling to hearing your mate say "I'm bogged, can you bring the hilux around?" hahahahaha

Last UHF I had was hard to hear because it was up under the dash. however UHF's have come along way since that particular model.

I don't have any photos but you can see it in my video at about the @ 2:55 mark of the below video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AMDZYcIuSUA&t=198s

Thats my 2 cents, hope it helps.
Cheers - Mulder

I’d like a roof console to add some directional map lights and sunglasses holders, but not a uhf. Wouldn’t like the cord swinging in my ear.
Think the only difference between XRS 330 & 370, 370 has a built in speaker and is DIN sized. 330 is so small and light, mine is double side taped to a box behind the glovebox. Great unit, plan is to add the DFES channels (listen only) in case I see a bushfire when wheeling in the bush. Plenty loud enough and great quality sound from the handset, don’t need another speaker.

I have the GME XRS-330c. For all the reasons Critter states.
Easy install, mine is under the transmission tunnel, below the two cup holders in the console, and wired directly to the second battery. i just plug the handset in when required (in the same manner as illustrated above). Clean, and easy, with no clutter!!
Other benefits, include supporting an AU company, and that the unit can be upgraded via the GME app, so its not redundant, or obsolete in two weeks time when "something new" comes out.

When I was looking, it was either GME or ICOM.....Units are on par, but the speaker, display and robust feel of the GME handset was way superior.

There is a hook to place your cord on. sits away all neat and out of your way. :)

righto, thanks for all the help, I like the idea of both of these mounts, the hidden one will probably be cheaper, and look really clean, and the console will add extra storage, do you have any more photos? what about an in dash mount?

Mulder that roof console unit looks pretty slick, also liked the video!

Critter and Allords how do these XRS Connect work? whats the benefit of them? How do you like yours? Upgradeable? considering they've discontinued the other really tiny ones I think this is the only option in that size.

Until the cord stretches. Maybe they don’t anymore, but they all used to.

XRS is a high quality unit. Looks feels and sounds quality. Connect to you phone via Bluetooth to change settings, program scan lists, add extra channels like the DFES I mentioned earlier. Couple of user programmable buttons. A heap more I don’t understand. You can program other high end radios too, but not as easily. I don’t do it a lot, but reckon there’s value in being able to do it wherever, whenever.

+1 for Critter350's set-up. I have a Uniden hidden in the driverside footwell with the RJ45 connector mounted in a similar location to Critter350 (I replaced the passenger side 12v plug with the RJ45 connector). I have also put a black stubby holder in the cavity next to the stereo. So when I am in town I just unplug the CB handset and pack it away in the glove box, when I am out and about I just plug it in and put the handset in the stubby holder. Also as an aside, with the Uniden unit it has a 3.5mm jack output, I bought the standard Toyota connector and plugged that into the auxiliary stereo input, I don't often use it but its there if I want it. I'd put photos up, but have no idea how to do it since Photobucket died.

Which new UHF? Where did you mount yours?

Postby Myralga on Wed, 17 Oct 2018 3:21 +0000

I know this in 5-15 but 15+ has two factory nut-certs in the drivers foot well on right hand side (pop the 6 button/blank panel and it’s right behind it.)
It barely Suits gme bolt pattern but it does go in.
Then just use the pass through from lightforce wherever you want it.

On my 07 I did similar the others Unit was under the tunnel and the mic came out in the dash pocket just clipped the smallest bit off the panel corner to let the cord through. Worked great.

I have mine mounted quite high , so that I can see the screen without distracting off the road too much and hear it well too (speaker mic control all in one).

slimline UHF, fits perfectly in the ashtray. 3M taped in hasn’t moved in 5+ years [emoji1305]

Take the botton off the back and use stick on velcro. Clean the dash with metho to get it to stick properly.
