Wires thru firewall

Just finding the antenna slaps around on the bonnet a little though, also getting sick of the wind whistle having to keep the window down 5mm where the wire comes in the cab.

Coiling coax cable causes inductance and will weaken or create interference with the signal. Whilst off the shelf uhf's only transmit at 5w, so don't have heap of power to cause real big problems you probably still want to get the best performance you can. Also running the coax near electrical looms, as in zip tied to one, will cut down performance of the transmitted signal too.

Don't mean to be a stick in the mud mate. But coiling coax basically produces a choke, which is effective at preventing common mode currents that flow on the outside of the sheild.. a feedline which is not decoupled from a resonant radiator will cause this problem..... A lot of ground independent antennas have this issue. Often providing a choke an electrical 1/4 below feedpoint is rather desirable

Furthermore, any decent coax will not be affected by being tied with ELV cable runs.... Though it is known good practice to segregate, it will not cause attenuation that will be noticed in the least bit... If it was to cause a problem, it would certainly have more to do with sheild integrity, impedance mismatch at the feedpoint or characteristic impedance differences.

Food for your thoughts

Cheers

I was just trying to make a point mate about getting best bang for your from what i was taught, granted most of mine is to do with vhf and hf.

Yeah it may not be the best solution and that did cross my mind in regard to having the coax coiled.

But it was a hell of a lot easier that soldering a new joint or running it else where.

When I installed car stereo stuff I always run the RCA cables on separate sides of the car to the power wire to the amps, but yeah, this works fine for me, for now.

Cables through firewall 09 D4D Hilux

Postby Ubahalex on Sun, 23 Aug 2015 6:00 +0000

Hi All,

As an intro, I've got a 2009 Hilux SR single cab 4x4 turbo diesel.

I've recently joined the forum to find info on how to get cables from the engine bay through the firewall into the cab for some switches I wanted to use to control some LEDs I got for the rear tray off eBay.

I've bought a dual battery tray and red arc sbi12 isolator which I'll install soon and I'll have those lights run off that.
Instead of trying to get some cable through the main firewall grommet and possibly damaging the factory cables I looked for another way. I took the injector module off on the passenger side and there is a small grommet that I used to run 4 cores of 1.5sqmm i think, it's good for 7.5Amps anyway which is plenty for the switch controlling the relay coil I'm using. Also going to use some cores for a USB charger that fits in the switch positions.

I just took the grommet out by hand and drilled through it since it's solid all the way through. I took the side trim off on the passenger side which holds down the vynil floor. Then took out the glove box and small quarter panel on the door side of the footwell. I took off the trim underneath the switches but I probably didn't need to do that. I pulled down some of the sound proffing behind the grommet. I used some Vasoline around the grommet and pulled the cables through easily.

I highly recommend car trim removers which I got from trade tools for under $10, saved me breaking the trim.

I haven't got the switches off eBay yet but I thought this may be useful for others!

Cheers,

Alex

firewall grommet holes

Postby krayzie on Mon, 23 Oct 2017 1:55 +0000

Hey Guys

what is everyone doing when the have multiple cables that needs to be run through the firewall, the current grommet looks like it could run only a few smaller gauge wires but if you have wires to switches and power cables etc i dont think it will fit

A bit of dishwashing liquid in warm water works well. I had some coaxial cable for a UHF that I was determined to get into the car via a particular grommet. One lathered in the dishwashing liquid/warm water combo., it was an easy job.

You can get proper tool (shuttle?) but I used an 8mm knitting needle from Good Sammy for 50c, cut it in half and taped the cables to it for my amplifier power wires, 4 & 8 AWG. Bit of lube goes a long way, wipe up the excess so it doesn’t collect dust.

G'Day Trd2K

I have 4 on one side & 6 on the other & I'm certain I could fit a few more :)

Once you get one cable thru., tape the next one to that one & so on, it is actually very easy !!!

Pics are not going to help with this job, but I found a short ladder did.

Wires thru firewall

Postby Critter350 on Wed, 18 Apr 2018 1:13 +0000

Here’s a pic that may help. Image feed the wire into the back of a plastic knitting needle (they’re hollow) and tape in place. The needle makes a small hole and stretches the rubber, so it can shrink back around the wire/ cable. Makes it very easy.
Knitting needle is about 50c from Salvo’s.
