One tip I was told is when you do run wires through the firewall you should create a drip loop by that I mean make the wire run lower than the hole and then back up into the hole.
That way any water running down the cable will drip off at the bottom not run into your car.

As for the tear in your grommet I think replacing it would be very difficult and costly if it was in my car I would use some black silicon to seal it up, if you use some spit or diluted detergent you can smooth it off very nice, even soak a pop stick in the detergent solution to "tool" it off if you want.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong but I think the black silicon used for windshields would do the trick nicely cos it will stick well to the rubber.

Just had 2 run 2 wires through this arvo for a switch. Mechanics wouldnt rego it because my light force were not able to be off whilst highbeams were on  was like that when i brought it so i suppose you get that.
Lease he didnt make me go back to him

Best was i found any way is if running multiple wires through, by some multicore cable 5-7 and run through and work off it.

Black sika flex will work well

The reason I know about the grommet is because about three months ago we had a diesel 200 towed in that had damaged wires from a rat eating them. Ended up buying a whole new engine loom from Toyota through insurance. Cost them 2200 for the loom. they had 3 in perth from memory too so I don't think they're alone. And that loom had all the clips etc on it and no way was anything separable.

Black Sikaflex....

Use a large cable tie pushed through from inside and tape new wiring to it as a pull through.

And next time get some lube on that wire so you don't tear up your girl.
Luxes can be sensitive.

These model Hilux have the most available extra provisions for wiring through firewall grommets of any vehicle I've worked on. Plenty of those nipples to cut off then just use s little silicon for total seal plus other main grommets can easily have holes drilled/punched/melted through them.
The main ECU loom is a good one, just unplug from ECU behind glovebox and unhook support clips and pull grommet out of firewall, untape loom from grommet then you can feed more wires through same hole, I had all loom for chip going through as well as some other wires, then tape everything back up, reinsert grommet and plugs back in, for antenna cable I drilled a hole for a 5/8" grommet and after installing grommet and cable used sikaflex for unbreakable seal.

Must of been a really anal mechanic. Mine passed me no problem, and it was a toyota dealer too.

I had a switch in the dash which wasnt connected to anything from previous owner, I think it was used for lights on the roof previously. I asked ARB guys to hook them up when they put the bullbar/hellas on, but they just wired them into the high beam, which I didn't notice till I got the ute back. I was kinda annoyed because I knew it was illegal, plus they would be loading up the headlight fuse..

I might take it back but worried they will do a shitty job to spite me.

Best place to run antenna through firewall?

Postby mikey- on Fri, 14 Feb 2014 7:49 +0000

Going to install my UHF this weekend.

I've had a look around the engine bay, and a search around the forum, and haven't really found a recommended way to run the antenna from the engine bay to the cab.

I found a thread where it was run through a spare grommet behind the glove box.

Image

Is this the best place to run it? Or is somewhere else better?

Cheers

It not the easiest job in the world to get it through the hole,i recommend you use some silicon spray (or your favourite lubricant) :D ,makes things soooo much easier.

Did same through there with two antenna cables - a little detergent and water - dries off without sticky residue and won't attract dust/dirt like silicone or oil based type lube...

OK well I got it all done today.

To get through the grommet I just used some sparky tape to attach some builders string to a straight bit of coat hanger, then tied the string to the coax and put heat shrink over the connector so it slid easily. Used a little lube, but probably didn't need it, came through very easy.

Tucked the unit away pretty well in the passenger kick panel thing. Nice neat install with only the hand piece visible really.
