Wires thru firewall

Postby sclaff on Thu, 04 Aug 2011 7:41 +0000

Gday Everyone
This is probably a stupid question, but is there an easy trick to getting cables (eg. UHF antenna cable) thru the firewall ??? The obvious grommet looks pretty darn full to me & looks like it will be quite fiddly, or is this just the way it is, so i have to deal with it. Any help is much appreciated.
Cheers
Steve

Hi mate....there are 2 nipples on the grommet cut one off and you have a nice new hole to push wires through

Best way to shove something into a tight hole is to use lubrication

I use a water and detergent mixture, that way when it drys there is no residue in there to collect dirt.

Armour all is the cheapest stuff for lube. Also, don't advise using coat hanger as if you jam it into a wiring loom it'll do damage almost instantly. I use the plastic strip from tongue/groove flooring, tape the wires to it, squirt with armour all the push through the cut off nipple. Easy as.
P.S. you lot are sick, but I like it.

sorry to dig up an old thread with my first post, but I have a bit of a problem that relates to this...

A mate of mine who has a bit of experience with this kind of thing fitted my new UHF unit to my new ute, and in the process has put a tear in the firewall grommet. It's the one described behind the glovebox area, and there are a shitload of cables going through there. It seems to have ripped the whole nipple, and you can see light coming through it now.

It has been wet so I haven't driven the ute, but what can I do? Any idea how much it would be to have Toyota replace the grommet? Looking at all the cabling running through there I don't think it's a real DIY job, and given that it's a brand new ute I don't think that plugging it up with a bit of Selley's All Clear is a great idea either.

Any ideas?

I usually whisper gentle feelings to snowwhite the hilux , tell her that this may hurt a little but it's going to be for the better.

I then get a coathanger bent in half, duct-taped to the cable im trying to push through, and jam it on through with a bit of force. Or ... if you have the luxury, find an existing cable to duct-tape the new one too and pull it through that way.

passenger side is much easier to deal with thats where my aux power leads, uhf leads, antenna cables for next G etc all come in.

Usually its that tight that there's no air flow / water flow through there anyway ... but at worst, you mus tremember that water already can traverse along those dozens of wires and into the cabin.

Maybe just stuff a rag / hand towell in there?
