270 degree wing awning on a Hilux Dual Cab. Can it be done?

Postby gorilla5150 on Fri, 16 Mar 2018 6:54 +0000

Hi Guys,

I’m looking at getting a 270 degree wing awning like the 30 second or Alu Cab ones for my dual cab SR5 with classic ARB canopy and ARB roof bars, but I was told by a local 4wd shop that they wouldn’t recommend installing it on dual cabs like mine due to the weight and stress the rear pivot point would put on the canopy.

So I’m wondering if any members here have had success with installing a 270 degree and if so what brand would you recommend?

Thanks,
Gorilla

The only guy I've seen with one of those has it mounted on an Amarok. And he reckons he's had it in some decent winds with no dramas.

He's got the 30 second awning......it's bloody brilliant by the way.

What sort of internal bracing does the canopy have gorilla?
There’s a fair bit of force and leverage on that rear corner when a gust of wind picks up the awning.

Cannot see why you couldn’t do this. I wouldn’t really be worried about the weight (arb classic canopy with internals is rated to 100kg on a smooth road.)
Don’t really know why he would be worried about the pivot. This is basically a static load. You don’t have it open while driving.

If your still worried. Rhino just recently changed manufacturers so as stated before the fox wing is now the obsolete model.
Replaced by the BATWING.
Also they are making a smaller version too. I think it’s 2-2.1m rather then 2.5m better for a ute in my eyes.
I cannot remember the name but I think it’s the Batwing echo.
Hope this helps

I have some pics on my foxwing in my shed. Let me know if you need more pics or anything else.

Tyler 1993 - I have a ARB internal supports for their classic canopy. So 100kg load rating as Myralga has said above. My concern is that I can't spread the awning position across the cabin roof bars and canopy roof bars at the same time as flexing will occur and snap the awning. Is this a myth or will it happen? Or maybe cause structural damage to the canopy itself due to flexing by the weight. So if I just put the awning on the 2 canopy roof bars, then approx the front third of it will not be supported. Anyone got any suggestions?

I have three supports on the canopy and one support on the cabin. On the cabin support I use soft vibration dampers that will admit flex.

I’ve just bought a Batwing Awning.

Haven’t seen them on another dualcab apart from above.
Mounting to my tray/canopy is going to be different.
I’ll see how it turns out and send through.
I “test” mounted on some modified brackets, unsure on feelings.
Will post more.

I don’t have the batwing or fox wing.
But I have ARBs aluminum encased 2.5m awning. Biggest problem I see with these size awnings is the sheer weight. I snapped the front mount on awning side and plan to double or triple the mounts when I take it off and modify it all.
Just gotta do it before next trip.

Yeah I noticed the same thing with where mine would be mounted so I’ve welded an extra plate to the Rhino Awning Mounts to coonect to the side of my headboard and rear.

Problem I currently think I’ll have with mine is that where I’m mounting is around 100mm off the side of my roof rack on the car, Not sure if it’s going to look weird. once all in place I’ll see if it needs different brackets all together
