Deteriorating steering wheel

Postby gtsteve on Thu, 30 Mar 2017 4:17 +0000

Recently in the very humid weather, I have noticed that the steering wheel fake leather is rubbing off easily/unintentionally under my fingers.
Am I alone? It is no longer smooth but rough in a lot of places, the smooth surface has just turned to paste.
What can I coat it with?

I had the same issue on mine and sounded like it was relatively common from conversations with the dealer. Thankfully Toyota replaced mine it under warranty.

Mines a 2013 SR5 and my steering wheel was clappin out to. I went back to Toyota even though it was out of warranty by 9 months and they agreed to replace it along with the gearknob.

The steering wheel was $2800 alone on the invoice so any bloke looking to buy a new one from Toyota will need a bank loan  Unbelievable of some of the prices they come up with.

Crikey!
I will just use clear varnish or something. Boot polish, layers of it?
or a cover.

Good on Toyota though for coming to the party, in your case,
they get bagged enough for other stuff.

Yea I was really surprised they offered to replace it all.

In your case, I would send your steering wheel to a trimmer. Maybe a trimmer that specialises in steering wheel restorations.

my 2010 wheel is falling apart on the top too. pretty annoying as the rest of the interior is mint.

car was always garaged before I owned it too.
