Audible A/C Relay behind Glovebox

Audible A/C Relay behind Glovebox

Postby fullewat on Wed, 29 Mar 2017 10:45 +0000

Hi All,

In the last 2 weeks I've heard the A/C relay switching approx every 20 seconds. I've had the car 6 months and haven't heard it before. I took it to Toyota who said it was normal in the Hilux. I asked why the "normal" sound wasn't heard for 5.5 months previous and they couldn't tell me.

Has anyone else got this problem, and if so have you been able to fix it? My ideas so far are to dampen the relay manually or maybe go for a Solid State Relay (SSR). I'm only just learning of the SSR's now and not quite sure on them.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers
Tom

Its the magnetic clutch relay that switches the compressor and its normal to make the sound.

Just wrap the relay in sound deadening material.

Relay Sound deadening

Postby fullewat on Mon, 24 Apr 2017 8:13 +0000

Hi All,

For those that are electrical savvy, would the sound deadening material in the link below be able to cover an A/C relay? Would the heat generated by the relay possible cause it to burn?

If it bothers you that much find a solid state relay the same style as the AC one. don't cover it

Relays generally dont heat up unless they are stuffed (pitted contacts etc) all it is is a remotely switched set of high current contacts. The only issue i see with covering it in sound deadening is trying to get it out if you ever need to replace it.

It annoys the hell out of me haha... I've looked at SSR's but was unsure if they could replace the current one being used. I'll look into it further!

That's good to know! Thanks for the feedback. I was thinking of just sticking the material on the relay itself, and possible onto the part it plugs into. Hopefully would be able to cut it away if the relay ever needed to be replaced.
