Overfilled engine oil that now wont drain

Postby scott5524 on Fri, 06 May 2016 4:52 +0000

Embarrassing question, but looking for some advice. I've got a 2009 diesel Lux and today whilst changing the oil/filter, I accidently overfilled with new oil, (I put in 10lt).
I got about 1 km down the road before it started spluttering & carrying on and blowing HEAPS of thick white smoke.
Once I realised what I had done, I got the vehicle towed back home.
Here is the part that im having trouble with: When I went to drain the excess oil out, only about 1lt drained out?
The fill cap is off, but I still cant get any more oil to drain out?
Thoughts? ideas?
Am I missing something simple?? (This is quite possibly the case, as I am NOT mechanically minded!)
Thanks in advance

Might pay to check that nothing is blocking the drain hole

Did you undo the wrong plug?? Maybe that's why it's overfilled

Strange that 9l has disappeared - maybe wrong bung or blockage. The engine would have blown up if it dieseled on the engine oil for 9 litres. Typically it will only diesel on the engine oil till the level gets low enough to stop venting into the turbo breather. Usually also requires a good boot under it to get crank case pressure high enough to start the blow by process. Will be interested to see what comes of this.

There's 10L in the container, well I better put it all in...

Interested to see if he ever comes back to tell us the outcome.
