Tailshaft thud still after grease up

Postby holdon on Tue, 01 Dec 2015 7:38 +0000

Even after a good grease up my tail shaft is still thudding after braking to a stop. It would improve after the grease up but only last a few days. So I gave it over a dozen good pumps on the gun until grease started to escape the seal - thinking it Just needed more grease :? . Perhaps I have damaged something here? I have read over all the threads on this but I can't find anyone who still has this issue even after a grease up. Could I possibly have an air lock in there? Or old bad grease? I noticed this got worse after I lifted the rear suspension and in turn lengthening the slip joint. Is there a max length these can be opened? Im looking for ideas anywhere now as this is annoying but also sounds like it's going to do long term damage. Thanks.

Are you sure it's not the spare wheel? They make a bit of a thud unless they're really tight. I am likely to be way off, but thought i'd mention it just in case.

Cheers.

Hi holdon,
Check your rear tail shaft angles - with the rear lifted the universal joints may be strained - I had a shudder that I corrected by using 3 degree castor wedges on the rear axle to reduce the angle.

Thanks for the replys. The spare tyre is all good. It's definitely from the tail shaft. I know what you mean about the angles and I had a slight shader on take off but once the suspension settled down and hardly noticeable.

Would a one piece tail shaft eliminate both the shudder and thud? If so maybe it's on the cards.....

Are all your splines in good nick ? Worn splines or a buggered uni joint will cause a cluck

What's involved with inspecting the splines? I suspect this is what is the cause

I had a similar thing with my 2013/2014 SR5 and did a bit of googling and found the followin. Though this isn't the exact same article. The original one I found was a recall for US FJ's and described the problem "..feels like you have been hit from behind/rear ended." which is exactly what I thought the first time I felt/heard it. Mentioned the recall to the Toyota dealership and they said that is an option but their first step is to regrease and I haven't had an issue since.

That's for the tip however i have greased it several times. It helps but only lasts a matter of days and then the thud is back....I'm going to attempt to remove the tail shaft this wknd to inspect the splines and clean out the old grease.

For those following. Just an update. I ended up pulling apart the slip joint, cleaned it out and packed new grease into it. Thud is totally gone and it's not flinging grease from the seal anymore either. So I suspect either a air lock or perhaps too much grease. Thanks to everyone for assistance.

Interesting thread. I am looking at buying a 2016 Hilux SR% (Auto) and experienced this "thud" in a test drive. My dealership says there is no fix ATM but that Toyota are aware of it. It seems from this thread that this is an issue that has been apparent on a number of models for a number of years. I'm unsure now if I should go ahead with the purchasing? Any thoughts or anyone else out there with the same issues on the 2016 Hilux? I would be interested in knowing the experience of others on this matter. Happy to receive any input from anyone on my potential purchase. Cheers

I took my 2010 in to driveline services in brisbane today and took them for a drive. My car has a bit of vibration below 5kph accelerating and decelerating, and the clunk described in this thread.

They reckon all hilux's do this, and that the 2016 hilux, rangers, BT50 etc all do it just as bad as the older utes.

So unless it gets worse, i'm just going to live with it.
