Upper arms - Maximum clearance to wheel - which brand

Upper arms - Maximum clearance to wheel - which brand

Postby murf6 on Tue, 01 Dec 2015 6:42 +0000

G'day guys.

I have just brought myself a 2014 hilux and my current wheel/tyre combo is hitting on the upper control arm when on near full lock. I have done plenty of reading of the site and understand what wheel tyre combo works the best but was really hoping to keep my current set up. So what I am wanting to know does anyone have any information as to what brand of aftermarket upper control arm would offer the most amount of clearance for this issues. I was planning on getting new UCA's at some stage so if I can ensure I buy the right one then it might enable me to keep my current set up without having to replace my rims.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Yea thee are plenty to choose from these days hey. They do all appear to be generally the same shape though. Can anyone pass on any info as to if there are any that don't protrude out as far as the standard arm toward the rim.

I only have about 10mm clearance from the control arm to the rim, so when I turn toward full lock the tyre rubs on the arm. I was interested to see if any of the arms mentioned above sits in closer to the body increasing my current 10mm gab in a hope of eliminating the tyre rub when on full lock.

Yea no drama. It has standard 2013 17 inch SR5 alloys fitted with 285x70x17 BF Goodrich All-terrains. Most posts say that this combo won't work and they are right it touches on the control arm. The previous owner tells me it has had the 33's fitted for the last 20,000k's. He has never taken it off road and must have mostly driven in straight lines. Everywhere else they fit really well, it is just touching the control arm that is an issue. If I can get a control arm that offer the most amount of clearance then I might be able to make it work and show that it can be achieved for anyone else that would like to fit 33's and keep their standard wheels.

Cheers.

Speak to Brendan at Ultimate suspension
You need the right amount of lift, rim offset, tyre profile, diff drop or body lift depending on what you prefer, sway bar relocation, and upper arm or offset bushe settup. Then trim - a lot of work and $. In a 2014 you will most likely lose your front driveline warranty + probably anything else connected to suspension or steering...
Anyway - talk to Ultimate, they deal in this sort of thing regularly and have seen lots of different setups.
They will sort the "33's will fit mate" BS from previous owner quickly

So plenty of UCA brands mentioned here (also Tufflux and Calloffroad)........some have adjustable camber and caster, some use a spherical ball joint and some have a uniball set up.......which set up have you guys gone with to minimise the dreaded rubbing on the body mount and guard when running bigger rubber like 33's.......want to get this exercise right first go....... ;) ;) ;)

I run 3" lift from monster rides with the MR UCA's. Run 16x8 rims, 285/75/16. No rubbing. Did have to bend pinch weld flat and remould plastic. By memory wheel alignment about 5.26deg. Do hit arb bar splash guards under hard compression.

The MR bump stops work really well to by limiting up travel. Oh and rims are zero offset. Thanks richo also for the heads up on Moreton ended up cb13 campsite how good.
