Metal ticking noise when lux is cooling down?

Postby Scober on Sun, 24 May 2015 7:19 +0000

Hi,

I've got an issue that's recently started. It's a metal ticking sound like when metal had expanded after heating up then returning to its resting state? It's coming from under the bonnet and I suspect near the dump pipe but not 100% sure.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Scott

Sounds a lot like the turbo vane controller, which will often reset and perform self checks once the engine is off.

Thanks for the reply Steve, would you believe we are travelling up the coast as I write this and the bloody ticking noise starting when we first took off, only a few times which I'm guessing was until the engine heated up?!

So I'm buggured if I know?

Very hard to diagnose a ticking noise without hearing it mate, but I would put my money on the Turbo controller which is a normal noise

You will most likely find it is the exhaust retracting

mate if this is happening with the ignition on and engine off m then stick your head under the bonnet near the turbo and you will hear a sort of gear or ticking sound, if that is the sound it is normal. If it is happening with the engine off it is something else.
cheers.

My 2012 does the same. Sounds alot like an unlubed joint moving. I've noticed a creaking sound when the front suspension gets travelled a fair way. I'm going to grease up what I can and see if it helps.

The noise I'm experiencing sounds like a typical dried out control arm joint.

See how we go I guess!

My 2012, did it the whole time I had it. If it was quiet and in the garage you could also hear a dripping noise like oil settling. Was never a problem, I always put it down to metal cooling. Have herd similar noises in a lot of cars over the years.

Scott you are likely right, internal baffles crack away from the housing allowing them to expand and contract as the outer shell cools faster than the internal cracked baffle causing movement which is the baffle ticking under the contracting pressure.

When it is doing it listen at the cat converter and also check that the heat shields on the manifold are tight.
