ATF Temp vs Coolant Temp?

Postby Jersey4x4 on Thu, 05 Mar 2015 9:36 +0000

I have just installed a blue tooth OBD reader paired to the paid version of the TORQUE app

I wanted to monitor the Auto Box temp while off road as I here it can overheat

However when I compared the ATF Temp and Engine Coolant Temp they are exactly the same! They rise the same and they fall the same

Is this normal or is the app interpreting the engine Coolant sensor as the ATF Fluid as well?

Thanks

Jay

They should not be the same Coolant is usually around 85 ish
And the auto depends on driving conditions but at a guess sits around 65 ish

ATF temp definitely fluctuates when driving, ranging from around 50-100 plus. Cooling water temp would be lucky to move 5 degrees. Sounds like you are not reading the atf

Coolant sits 85degrees roughly normal, when working hard may go to 90-95degrees, your ATF should be around 60-80 degrees roughly

they both get cooled in the same radiator so why would the temps be that different my auto always overheated on the beach until l put a 3" exhaust on it and gave it a little more power hasn't overheated since

Because the engine temp is controlled by a thermostat

I should possibly add that it's around 10 degrees Celsius outside and as the island is only 10 miles wide by 9 miles long I only manage 20-30 min journeys....

Sounds like both readings are recording radiator temp. My Scan Gauge II ATF temp takes 3-4 times as long as coolant temp to get to operational temp. ATF gets up to around 60-65 after 20 or so minutes and coolant around 83-85 after 5 or 6 minutes. This in 2014SR and ambient air temp of 30-36 degrees.
