2015 SR5 E LOCKERS

Postby Gary_s on Thu, 05 Mar 2015 3:08 +0000

Hey all,

I just bought a brand new SR5 lux and want to get E lockers fitted. Apparently only Opposite Lock and Terrain Tamer do it in Sydney, and I just wanted to ask people's opinions about where I should get it fitted.

I've only ever heard bad things about Opposite Lock and I was thinking that Terrain Tamer might not do a clean install of wiring and switches.

Any help as to where I should get it fitted would be great! Even considering driving it down to Melbourne to the head office to get it fitted. I'll be making a trip to Melbourne soon to Wholesale Automatics to get the nomad valve body fitted and the lock up kit, so it could be a 2 bird 1 stone sort of trip.

Cheers,
Gary

I would just drive down the Hume and get Harrop to fit them mate. They fitted my Runva winch and did a sweet job. Couple of the boys are into 4wding as well. Some tough trucks in the carpark.

Now I've got my mates telling me to go air over e.. They said it would suck for a wire to be cut flush with the diff housing, at least with air you can pull over and change a air line quickly. Decisions decisions!

Decisions... I am undecided,too

Autolocker (lokka) is always on (in 4WD if in the front)

Air Lockers, need air. So I have to carry a compressor (done), an air tank (to do, needs space), a pressure switch to operate the compressor (to do), a relay and a switch, and some hooses.

Elocker - need some wire and a switch.

I think, it it comes upto me - I´ll be buying the elocker

I had air lockers in my 80 series, if you get the arb compressor, you don't need a separate air tank or pressure switch, it is all one unit. Air Locker, compressor, hoses, switches. The only difference underneath is an air line or a wire.

Having said that, when I get lockers in my lux, I intend on getting e lockers.

hi
I have had autolockers and air lockers they have good and bad with both
auto at roundabouts if you get it wrong [the handbrake hated it]
air locker had oring and oil back to compressor [back to arb again]
elockers for me this time it is easy to mend a broker wire then air lines full of mud and dirt.

in autolockers, I would only consider the Yukon Grizzly or the Detroit. both have reasonable on road maners (much better than a lokka)

Gary_s, you only ever hear about the bad about shops, you never hear about the thousands of good jobs they do.....when I spend this amount of coin I ask to talk to the mechanic/technician first. Oh an if you wire or airline are ruling neatly than you shouldn't have a problem ripping things out.

Re: compressor running a the time, a correctly installed air locker the compressor should run a the time.

Re: needing a compressor, tank etc etc. those who modify there rigs and go touring generally carry a compressor.....I have always permanent mounted my compressors. Oh my last rig had ARB lockers but I used the compressor I already had installed

Have you compared cost between all the locker available on the market?? Be interested in the price comparison.

Cheers

I have ARB lockers fitted front and back. When you engage both, the compressor wouldn't run for more then 5 sec and then turn itself off. On the last Hilux ARB mounted it under the passenger seat and it didn't bother me at all. This 1 it is mounted under the bonnet.

I know the E lockers are about 1,000 cheaper then the air. Correct about hearing negativity about shops, I guess hearing the bad helps decide weather the shop is good or not. Least amount of negativity equals a better shop.

I have only ever dealt with Arb Artarmon which did a awesome job on my GU patrol, but I'm now looking at other workshops to try and score a better price.

I think with lockers it's much of a muchness, either air or e they are both going to be awesome!

Have you tried going to ARB Artarmon lately? they have moved about 500m up the road, the closest park is usually about where the old store was.

I agree though, they have done some good work for me as well and wouldn't hesitate to use them again for mechanical work. Will just think twice before jumping in the car for a quick run up the road to look at my latest "need" just too hard to park.

As far as lockers go, I have had ARB air and now have Elocker, I had the air locker repaired twice in the couple years I had it, only minor problems but required diff centre removal, admittedly that was in a car that copped a harder time than my current Hilux.

You sure about e lockers being cheaper than air? I bought front and rear arb air lockers for $900 ea and e locker $1600 ea.
