what is the widest tyre size

General discussion of basically anything Hilux related

what is the widest tyre size

Postby sharp018 on Thu, 30 Oct 2014 4:36 +0000

Hello I have done research but cannot get 35s under my truck without bulk mods. I have a 2 inch lift with mostly cut front gaurds im running 33s or whar ever 285/70r16 = in imperial

They stuck out of the sides of my car a bit so I brought jungle flares but now they make the tyres look skinny and the flares have over a inch over hang off the tyre

I've got 16x7 rims can anybody tell me if 16x8 is for a wider tyre or what wider tyre I can run

I do want wider for a bigger footprint

If anyone can help that would be aweosme! !

Wow its a wonder they put them on.

try this for actual size, can also show how much your speedo will be out,
http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

8" = max 285
9" = Max 305

Either way a lot of modification to be done
Correct me if im wrong.

Did you try the tyre bibble thread?

Hey man thank heaps for that calculator works a treat.
Yeah I did check that thread but noone has said what rim it was as in 16x7 or 16x8 they just said 16 which is what I thought was sus. So technically if there 16x8 they will be wider correct ? I assume the 7 or 8 is the inch width of the rim yes?

So yeah the x8 or x7 is the inch of width

This may sound silly but what is the widest 16 inch rim?
I can only find 16x8?

They are a 16x10 rim... thats the widest.

I have 16x8 on my 285/75/16, all tyres are different widths.

If your running 285/75r16
The min max rim is 7.5-9" but recomenend is 8"
http://m.bfgoodrichtires.com/tire-selec ... c-pdf.page?
This is from the bfg site if you look at each size tyre it will give a min/max tyre size then the caluated with on set size (8" for 285/75r16) and then an overal size

Before you buy anything you need to know what offset you have now factory is p30

If you are running a 16x7 in p30 offset (factory)
That means that (7"x25.4=178mm) from the outside surface of rim to where the hub site is
178/2= centre+30mm=
60mm outside to flange
118mm inside outer edge to flange

So measure what you have now,

If you were to fit 16x8 with same p30 off set yes the rim will go out wider on each side but tyre will still site where it is now,
So if you want a wider stance buy 1" then you will new to order 25mm less offset then you have now

Many run p13 (new fj offset) or even a 0,
On older models pre05 it very commont to see -22 and -44 offset (I run -22 on 285/76r16)

Also if you are running 285/75r16 on 16x7p30 right now and want to got 1" wider in stance
You could look at 305/70r16 on 16x9 p20 but you'll need a lot of trimming
As a 1" wider tyre is 12.7mm a side so you are out 12.7mm already then -10mm offset gives you 1" wider stance and 1" wider wheels leaving the same inside measurment

But in all honesty you'll be much better off sticking with 285 on a p15 to p20 16x8 steel rim and running a set of lockers
farting is alot like jxxxxxg off. both provide instant gratification, but neither is a long term solution to the actual problem......................

x 2 Above, wider and bigger is not necasary the best for off road.

Thanks heaps fellas :) I think ill get a set of 16x8 with a recommended offset. I have arb front and rear locks I find a little wider tyre will help from slipping in to the bike tyre ruts :/

so true Cuzo.
after many miles out bush, I've come to the conclusion that 265's (10.5") are the best width for most of the country ie. that is a good compromise between what is needed in the outback vs what is needed in coastal regions (mud or beach sand)

The people who fitted them were huntsman in dandenog they dont seem to know much like I carry around a torque wrench for when ever I take wheels off ect. Anyway I got new tyres put on which are the 285 75 16 and theu only rattle them up I dont relie on just being rattled up so once I left I go to pakenham and checked i was shocked that my torque wrench could almost go around twice before getting tension. So for anyone ever getting tyres or wheels from therr watch out. Plus there not as friendly as others I have been to with previous cars
