No Catalytic Converter!

Postby islandflyer on Tue, 21 Oct 2014 8:51 +0000

My 2013 Hilux in the Bahamas does not have a catalytic converter. It gets great MPG, but was wondering if it it possible to add a catalytic converter and if that would effect the performance/mpg at all?

If your state doesn't require one I wouldn't bother. Free flowing is best for performance etc

I did a bit of online research after this, does the catalytic converter on diesel benefit the environment as much as on a gas engine?

Why on earth would you add a cat if it is not required?

if you want performance, get a 3" exhaust (no cat) and be happy with extra power, torque, sound and less fuel consumption (from 9.0litres/100km down to 6.9/100km)

3" straight through is not recommended. for best efficiency the variable vane turbos need some back pressure. this is generally felt as a lack of low down power

No such thing as 3inch straight through. The turbo outlet is smaller than 3inch

dude, seriously?!?
I thought it was obvious we were talking about the exhaust here
ie. a straight through exhaust has no cat or muffler

My exhaust is 3" right from turbo back to exhaust tip. 100cell cat and no mufflers. Only running a cat so if a cop looks under it they see one and move along. Seems to go better and spool quicker.

yes, running a cat seems to be enough, plus it sounds better imo

the other downside to a 3" is the lack of engine braking. this may be a concern for some people

yes the 3" reduces backpressure and lacks low-down... this is my experience but the benefits are a good compromise... better spool, better fuel consumption, lower exhaust temps etc etc, a good 3" system SHOULD include a collar right after the turbo, X-force does not! but it does do all the other stuff very well... maybe x-force should be asked if there is a collar in there? If not, get them to justify why not

collar is just a reduced pipe size or maybe just an extension of the turbo outlet diameter for a few cm. check the oem dump pipe, it is turbo exit diameter then opens up a little to exhaust pipe diameter. not much but obviously the Toyota engineers have taken this as a way of increasing (slightly) backpressure to the turbo.

any more technical explanations are welcomed :?
