Hilux 2.8- Adding a turbo

Postby simonreale on Mon, 22 Sep 2014 2:18 +0000

Hey everyone,

haven't been on here for quite a while, anyway, ive got a 2.8 hilux LN106 which I use as a beach and bush
car and have been looking at adding a turbo. The car is still fresh with only 120k on it, just need a bit more
power.

I was looking at getting a CT20 turbo or something similar, want to try and keep costs down to a minimum,
was going to do the install myself, maybe get some help with drilling and tapping into the sump if I have to.

Was wondering if anyone else has done this on here and whats the best way to go about it? I was also possibly looking at intercooling if that's an option.

Ive got some questions about reliability after this is done, should these engines be ok? It hasn't got high K's so I was
hoping id get away with stock internals. I do drive over 1000ks at a time if I go on trips so reliability is a must.

Also, if anyone is selling any turbos, manifolds etc that I will need please let me know!

Cheers

Get the ct20 from denco as they will run 35psi all day with no issues
As for manifold and dump pipe get from a 2.4l surf

You can get a s/h complete setup from about $900 with no pump

Or get a manifold/ dump pipe for around $300
Turbo from denco for just under $500
New bradded lines from pertek or enzed around $80-100 a piece

You don't need a cooler if you do t run big boost
7psi is where I would start, and just adjust the stock fuel pump
Def get an egr and keep under 500

If your handy, with a new turbo and making the crossover pipe, you should walk away under 1500 using most of your existing exhaust
With new 2.5/3" under 2k
farting is alot like jxxxxxg off. both provide instant gratification, but neither is a long term solution to the actual problem......................

I will suggest one thing, don't get greedy/ power hungry with the 2.8 and keep winding more boost into it, it won't hold up long.

So what sort of boost should I be running to keep it reliable? Should I still expect to get the same amount of k's out of it after adding the turbo? I don't know much about the 2.8 diesels, ive always had petrols
Any engine mods recommended apart from rebuilding to suit the turbo?

No cooler
Surf manifold with ct20
6-7psi and adjust the fuel pump up

No worries, il give it a go, just starting to track down parts, if anyone see's any newish or good turbos come up or manifolds let me know.

Should I go intercooled? Would it make much diff and will it help engine longevity?

Because of the low boost (6-7psi) I would worry about it
And you can alway add 1 latter if you decide to up the boost above 15psi
But without a boost controled fuel pump idd stick to under 10

Just don't expect a power plant under the hood
With 6-7psi you'll be around 80kw and 7-8psi 90kw and 220-250nm
My old daily before I fitted a 253 v8 ran 16psi no cooler stock pump
Blew a tonn of smoke down low under load and was fine above 15-1700
But would get better in a drag with a 5le running 10psi
