2007 Hilux Starter Motor

Postby jameslux07 on Mon, 22 Sep 2014 12:40 +0000

Hi guys New to the forum!
I have recently bought a 2007 hilux thats done around 200 000 kms.
Lately it has been getting slower and slower to start and the engine check light has just illuminated for EGR.
I have been trying to find my starter motor to do the replacement myself but so far i havnt been able to find it. Ive heard it is on the gearbox? could someone help me find my starter? ive had no luck youtubing or searching the forum etc
-My battery is brand new heavy duty
-My alternarter is getting voltage to it when the key turns to on etc etc

Any help would be much appreciated!'
Thanks James

Are you sure the starter is the problem. What voltage are you getting with the engine running?

Starter is on the pass side you can see it when looking from above under the oil filter. Prick of a job but reasonably straight forward. If it is the problem have it reconditioned. Much cheaper than replacement and you will still have a genuine unit.

Cheers,

Chris.

Just had mine changed, replaced it with a Jaylec starter. ($310 inc freight for the starter.) It's quiet, time will tell reliability wise though...

Make sure you have pulled the right 2 bolts, the top one comes from the rear of the car and screws into the starter bracket itself, cant remember if the bottom one is a nut and bolt or just a bolt, only ever had one out of the D4D.
The earlier 2.7s had a nut and bolt on the bottom.
Also when fitting up the replacement starter be extremely careful not to let the main battery cable stud turn when tightening the battery cable nut, support the cable as you tighten the nut, if the stud turns it will c**k the solenoid contact out of alignment and lead to a much shorter service life if it engages at all.

I agree with pisso, it isn't a very easy job, easier if you take the mount bolts out of the slave cylinder to make a bit more room to remove the starter once you have it unbolted.

Get it recoed and keep in in the shed ready. I had the same thing happen to me, had to put a starter in the kux in Wiepa. The aftermarket one only lasted about 3 years so now i have the recoed original one in it.

Cheers,

Chris.

Think it cost me $180 for the rebuild and the aftermarket one was $600.

Cheers,

Chris
