auto headlights

Hi all,

my 2012 diesel auto hilux went in for a ecu upgrade last week and I also asked them to add some delay to the headlights coming on when driving under bridge underpasses, for a second or 2.
Looks like I'm highbeaming drivers infront, all I need to get done for is tailgating or bullying or whatever.

Toyota service counter told me no worries that could reprogram it but when I picked up the hilux the next day they told me that it can NOT be done on the hilux.

I told them that I have heard that it can. They then said we can do it if you can find out how.

So I am looking for help to advise them how to find it in the toyota ECU program they use, in the menu/ address etc and even amybe what to set the delay to

would you be happy having them on all the time? (good safety) ... put some blue tac over the daylight sensor.

Can't say I've heard of anyone getting agro coz headlights come on ... providing you don't actually have high beam on.

I read this somewhere on the forum. It is possible. Done by the "yellow box" plug it into the ECU and adjust it. Im pretty sure it was Boxhead that said something about this.

Nar that was for the odometer. But I am still looking into this one.

Ok easy done this is how twist the filter on to to the desired sensitivity

where's the filter adjustment that the article refers to boxhead? A control knob under dash somewhere?

No mate on the dash itself the white filter for the light sensor on the right of the dash it twists. That is the sensitivity adjustment. Like the dimmer switch for your lights in your house.
Like I said. Just tried it and works a treat.
I learnt something now today as well.

hahah so hang on, there's a dial on the dash to adjust the headlight-on sensitivity? ... and the toyota dealer and user both couldn't figure it out??

The dial is the white dome thing that is the sensor which is on the top of the dash far right. Gently twist the white dome. That is the sensitivity adjustment.

correct me if im wrong but I thought there was 2 adjustments.

senisitivity...the amount of darkness for them to come on
dealy..... so u delay the sensitivity ie...yes its dark enough but ill wait x time before i activate the headlights.

x being set say to 2-3 or whatever delay for when driving under bridges.

Its this what i am after if indeed its possible

sensitivity should equate to delay though... it'll take longer and more darkness before kicking in. so a 2 second overpass shouldnt engage it, but a proper dark tunnel will.

The unit would probably have a capacitor that discharges/charges with the when the light changes to trigger. you would need to find the capacitor which is probably moulded into the unit and change it to a different size. Good luck with that. We may live in a programming world but old time electronics is usually the cheapest most reliable way to do things

Probably dont agree - sensitivity and delay are 2 different things because the delay comes after the trigger

a "delay" as such wouldnt really help you anyway ... all that would mean is that the lights would still flick on and off again going under a quick bypass ... but it would do it several seconds later... so this would have your road rage prone motorists even more likely to think you were "flashing them" because its occuring well afterward.

it really is the sensitivty you need.

Toyota might hjave just made them a bit too sensitive.

Most cars I've driven with auto on, would wait probably 3-5 seconds into a tunnel before engaging (holden and an audi anyway).
