ARB dual battery tray doesn't fit in 2012 SR5 diesel

Postby aaronpricey on Fri, 24 Aug 2012 6:11 +0000

Dear reader
Just want to let you guys know that the ARB dual battery tray for a hilux post 2005 will not fit in a 2012 diesel Sr5.
There are some flasher relays near the chassis ground that can't be relocated due to the harness length. And the battery will rub on the main harness in the corner as its really tight and can't be moved much.
Also read that it's not good to move the diesel module onto the tray as it can heat up more and since it has been relocated it voids any warranty.
So hopefully ARB realize this and update their design!

Mine fit.

My trailer flasher relays went in after the battery tray so I placed them in a different spot. Even still it would be a pretty easy harness to modify if you had to, its just a couple of blinkers.

if u put some velcro on the top of the fuse box and back of your trailer relys the rely box sits nicly on top

Yeah that's a good idea with the velcro!
It's a very tight fit!
I undone the main harness and couldn't get enough slack to fit battery in without it rubbing on the harness.
The relay harness is really short so have got much room to work with to extend the wires.
If you wanted to it would all fit but would be pretty dodgey, I guess I'm to much of a perfectionist and want everything to be nice and neat.

What about the module being moved some sites say it heats up touch i moved like required on the ARB tray.
Worried about warranty being voided because of this also.

You need to think outside the box. Mine went in easy. I think the flasher relays are for the bullbar signals.

not only for 2012, my 2007 got the same issue but I still consider it as "fit".

I spoke to the auto electrician at work this morning about fitting it and he said his mate fitted one and the edge of the battery began to wear through the wiring harness and had bare wires showing he had to repair it all for him.
He said to be carefully maybe fit a smaller battery or an optima battery with rounded edging.
Found another type of tray online from "off road down under" that fits in the other way, has anyone fitted one of these in their car?

Also do you guys use a solenoid relay or charger?
If charger here did you fit it?

I put a dc-dc charger on top of the fuse box, it does mean I need to take 3 wires off the charger to open the fuse box lid.

Ctek dc-dc charger
Manual parallel switch for jump starting
Optima battery but I think ill put it in my boat and get a 100ah something, maybe century agm.
Auxiliary fuse box

Only thing with this setup is even if the aux battery is flat it will only charge it at 20a if the parallel switch is open, Ctek make another box called smartpass to fix this but not sure where it would fit. probably fine the way it is.

Nice set up!
What model optima battery you using?
Does it rub on the electrical harness?
Would be ok with the rounded edges though.

Hi fella's,
I got my battery tray from Derek Bester (Ebay - 4145Derek)
I pulled it out of my 2006 SR dual cab, & installed it in my 2012 SR5 dual cab.
It went in OK and doesn't rub on any wires.
Full size battery.
The module goes on the side of the battery tray as it did on the 2006.
The 2012 module is slightly larger so had to drill a couple of holes to suit.
The module didn't overheat in the SR
so I'm hoping the SR5 will be OK as well.
Would post a pic but don't know how.. sorry

I have an imminent fridge purchase approaching so today I updated my second battery setup.

Today I put that D34 (55ah) in my boat and installed a Exide Industrial Deep Cycle 105ah, DC12V105
it fit perfectly and does not rub on the harness, 2mm clearance.

I have also done away with the parallel link. If ever needed I will use jumper cables, I needed the space for a 2nd fuel filter.

Hi "aaronpricey" I strongly dissagree, I purchased an ARB battery tray in 2006 to suit my first D4D SR5 went straight in after following all ARB instructions & moving the heat sink & bracket no problems not touching harness anywhere. I removed it (I did have a good look for any harness rubbing or body cracks no problems found) in 2008 when I upgraded again to my second D4D SR5 reinstalled same tray again went straight in again still no problems. In may 2012 I upgraded again to new face lift model D4D SR5 removed the tray again & checked for harness damage or body cracks none present. As the heat sink is longer than the previous two models it did require two new locating holes to be drilled before installing into vehicle,as for removing & relocating the heat sink I have never found a problem with that in any of the three vehicles, I have about 5mm clearence from the main wireing harness to the edge of the battery tray.(all my batterys have been N70ZZ starting batterys) My vehicles were all manual transmission, I cannot comment but may be the auto transmission have a thicker harness. If the harness was rubbed through may be something else was forcing it over or was moved when doing the installation. Another thought is at that point the harness would not be expected to move at all, or the battery tray was not installed properly,& the bottom anchor bolt was loose or missing completely, it is a little hard to get at but persevere it can be done. My trailer flasher relay is installed in the rear tail light space. I do not think the tray will fit into the new Lux when it comes out in 2014 but you never know! ;) ;) ;) There is a good picture of the fitted ARB tray on my shed site. Oh & absolutely NO problem changing fuel & oil filters. ;) CHEERS.

The flasher relays you guys are talking about are an optional extra for the trailer wiring so it is not standard equipment (but is a Toyota Part). There is plenty of room in the wiring loom to relocate it and the only one to be concerned about is the earth lead. A lot of times the trailer wiring has been installed incorrectly and routed down the passenger chassis rail. Done correctly, It should go into the cabin on the drivers side and emerge through the floor under the drivers seat so the wire for trailer brake controller is inside the cabin. If your rig's harness is incorrectly wired after the flasher relays, maybe you won't have enough slack in the wires to relocate it.

Now as for relocating the flasher relays, it is a really simple job to modify the bracket and mount the relays between the starting battery and the inner guard.

First cut along dotted line

Then adjust the bracket

Remove the starting battery and attach mount using existing bolt and maybe one more

Attach the flasher relay

How easy is that? The earth wire still reaches the main earth point

Well fitted a tray from "off road down under" and it fit sweet as! Didn't have to relocate anything.
Relays fit where they are.
Module still in same place.
Fully recommend.
Also used the redarc 20A charger unit fitted to top of fuse box.
