Rocker cover gasket

Postby emmacharman2506 on Thu, 12 Oct 2017 2:04 +0000

Hi I’m sure this has probably been covered before but I can’t find a relevant post, I have an 07 sr5 and my rocker cover gasket is leaking and I’m about to head off on a trip so I figured rather than Re tension bolts I will just change it out. Does anyone have any tips before I start? Are the glow plugs required to be removed and how to get them out? Have had intercooler off before that’s simple enough. Also while the rocker cover is off does anybody know the spec valve clearance so I can check that while I’m at it?

Cheers

Yea changed injectors at 150k now done 210k. Couple of weeks to go. I’ve already bought a new gasket kit which also came with new Glow plug seals.

You might want to get a service manual - not a simple job and requires somewhat speciality tools. Refer to injector threads then the valve clearance/bucket thread using the search function.

That head cover gasket should not be leaking so soon after the last injector work - take it back to who ever did it.
They may have cracked the cover or not used the correct sealant/procedure at the front of the cover next to the oil filler. Worth taking off the cover and having a look to see where its leaking from first.

The glow plugs are not located in the head cover so dont need to be removed.
Not sure why you would be given glow plug seals. You should have been given nozzle holder seals - these are for the injectors where the fuel pipes attach.

If the injectors have been out before you will want to replace the fuel lines - they can only be reused once

Thanks deadlybeast that exploded view helps a lot. My mistake I assumed they were glow plug seals I think that’s what I was told at my local auto shop. ( also my lack of mechanical knowledge, they are in fact nozzle holder seals)). Having the injectors changed was over three years ago but I’ll give them a call and see what they say. Leak started at the back on the firewall end and has now spread to seep out of the drivers side area also. Maybe I should just re tension and see how it goes?? Thanks for the heads up on the fuel lines was unaware of that, but that’s what makes this forum great.

Spoke with injector mob, they reckon they would have installed new gasket and seals and new fuel lines. They also won’t warrant over 12 months.

No worries mate
Wont hurt to check the torque settings and find where the leak is originating from while there

Genuine injectors and injector seats/sheets/seals?
If they replaced the injector lines that should be itemised on the invoice- approx $300-400

Just to be safe
When was the last time you got injector feedback values checked?
Checked the oil sump plug pickup screen recently?
Any smoke coming out from the the oil filer when removed and engine running?

Have found the leak! Changed nozzle seal thinking that was it but after cleaning it and putting it back together i found a hairline crack in the rocker cover right next to the nozzle. Looks like that gasket will come in handy after all.

I cant find an invoice because im pretty sure i had it done for cash last time. And no i havent had any of those checked at all since ive owned the car.

Good to find that crack in the cover . Not sure if a new gasket will stop the leak though? Is the crack right on the edge?

Get those injector feedback values done.
There were some afternarket injector seats circulating around the time you got yours done that end up failing.
Dont worry too much if genuine replacement parts were used but still worth doing every 10k

Both my my SR & my mate’s SR5 (both late 2008) had their injectors replaced at the same time earlier this year. Both had cracks in the rocker covers right near where one of the bolt holes is. I can only assume this shows how important it is to do the bolts up to the right torque, especially with the rocker cover being plastic. My Ute also was missing bolts holding the fuel lines in place, and some wiring connections were superglued into place. Both cars also had a broken fuel filter mounting with them both being zip tied on.
Think it just goes to show how important it is to find a good diesel mechanic who is familiar with these engines.

I mean the gasket will come in handy when I replace the rocker cover. Maybe i can just use some 2 part epoxy or similiar to cover the crack for now?

Toastie that sounds like some pretty dodgy workmanship. Did they fix their dodgy repairs or did you opt not to take it back?

The dodgy stuff was done before I bought it. I took it to a diesel mechanic to get the injectors done, and they showed me all the problems they found (cracked rocker cover explained a small oil leak, showed me the fuel filter which looked like it had never been changed, they fixed the fuel lines on properly but they recommended leaving the wiring as they couldn’t get the glued connections out & didn’t want to risk breaking them as if need a whole new wiring set which wasn’t cheap)
