Catching fire

Postby wildthing on Sun, 18 Jun 2017 5:00 +0000

Does the Hilux have the same catalytic converter set-up as the current model Prado with the 2.8L engine?
I am aware of 3 reports recently of Prados spontaneously combusting (one of which I witnessed myself a few weeks ago on the Canning stock route, when friends lost their 7-week-old vehicle to fire).
I've heard that higher temps are generated because of the Euro anti-pollution regdulations which Toyota has adopted.
As I'm about to order a new Hilux, would be interested to hear if this is a problem with the current engine and exhaust set-up.
Thanks,
wildthing

I'd say it was probably the dpf cos it get crazy hot! Many farmers are refusing to buy any of these new utes because of the massive fire hazard lurking under these things!

Buy the v6 and skip the DPF problems.

When i was working in the mines, i spoke to the mechanics there and they said the new v8 land cruisers have DPF in them. Not sure what there going to do but they did go ahead and ordered over 20 of them, Being they get really hot and being on coal surface is asking for trouble

Cats start fires to.
Mate burnt a down van with sewer camera gear in it 10 years ago, $250 000 up in smoke.
In saying that my next car will be a petrol, new diesels are way to fragile.

Ironically this is one reasons farmers refuse the V6's, exhausts get mighty hot / Catalytic COnverters.

Now the diels are doing the same thing with their DPF's

Try installing a Siamese Cat into your car next time - a reduced fire hazard if you're worried about the fur.

I'll consider the Siamese cat option, but in the meantime........
.........do all the dual cab utes on the market have this new fire-prone technology now, or just Toyota? Have heard the DMax uses older technology, so would be a lower risk (I'm looking at upgrading from the 9 year old Hilux this year).
Also noted elsewhere on this forum mention of a new recall for Hiluxes related to the dpf - part of the same issue perhaps??
Cheers

Yes all diesels are going to have to run DPF's, or Urea treatment systems, due to Euro V emissions laws now being in effect. It's one reason diesel is dying. Euro 6 will be even more strict. So much so, many of the engines we have in Australia can't be used in the EUrope or USA markets (wife's twin turbo diesel in her mazda).

As to DPF and how problematic, all manufacturers have had their issues, but some worse than others.

We'll all be back to supercharged petrol engines, many with electric motors. The big US F trucks are heading that way already.

I had the pleasure yesterday of watching a relatively new Western Star truck do a 'manual burn' of the DPF. Took 40 bloody minutes roaring away at 1500revs and the driver had to move the truck once cause the asphalt under the engine (and presumably the DPF) started smoking !
