Clunk on takeoff?

Hey guys,

I've got a 2003 SR5 4x4 KZN165 and lately I've noticed a distinctive clunking noise seems like from the front central area. It's more frequent now than when I first noticed it. It's only on takeoff not in between gear change and it only happens if I let the clutch out as I normally would - if I take it real easy on the clutch it doesn't make a sound...?! I've read plenty of forums but nothing definitive to point me in the right direction. I try to stay away from repair shops if I'm more than capable of fixing it myself but I might have to get a diagnosis from somewhere if I can't find it.

Any ideas/checks I could do would be appreciated!

Tail shaft unis, center bearing? ?

Yea heard it could be uni's. Just get under there and try move the tailshaft back and forth to find any play?? It's done 150k now so prob nackered!

Does it kinda feel as though the clutch engages suddenly even though the pedal is completely released? Happens in 1st and you are rolling a bit already?

Yea sort of Steveyb, at my place I take off heading uphill after reversing out the driveway and it always happens then if I roll backwards and take off without using the brakes (low speed of course) if you know what I mean..?! I've noticed it doesn't happen a lot on the flats but as soon as there's a bit of an uphill grade it starts clunking every take off.

Yeah right, keep us posted please if you figure it out. I'm having the same issue not long after fitting safari tuff clutch. I was thinking the slave cylinder because it's making funky noises

What is your idea of a funky noise?


I had a similar issue to Bazza84 after a rear diff and gearbox rebuild. I had the clutch changed while the box was out to an aftermarket clutch.

I have/had 3 issues with it

1. Knock on take off. Faster I took of the worse it seamed especially uphills.
2. Vibration through all gears especially under load (Still there when I get to drive it)
3. A whine/Squeal/Grind Noise. This is a bearing.

Fixes.

1. I found that the centre bracket of the tail shaft had been remounted to the cross member about 10mm further back then its original location. Loosened the bolt pushed it forward to original location and no more knock.

2. Nothing yet. Been putting up with it for the last 2 years. I have an idea this may be the brand of clutch itself. As I've spoken with a mechanic a few months back and he had the same symptoms with another hilux. Changed the clutch to a new and different brand and vibrations gone.

3. This issues was one that started about 6 months after I had my clutch replaced. I took it back to the mechanic that installed it and he dropped the gearbox out and replaced the spigot bearing (aka pilot bearing) this is a bearing in the centre of the flywheel to accept the input shaft off the gearbox. Once replaced it was great again for another 6 or so months I now have this same issues it comes and goes (when I drive the hilux long story). I've now seen a different mechanic and as the noise comes and goes he's not 100% without dropping the gearbox back out but thinks it's 1 of 3 bearings the Spigot Bearing again the thrust bearing or the front input bearing on the gearbox itself.

maybe the clutch dampener, when you fit a heavier clutch it can then play up

What is your idea of a funky noise?

It's clicking when pushed in and released and there seems to be sideway movement on the little rod. Put pressure on it and it doesn't click

Haven't had any work done on the drive train components at all guys that's what makes me think it's something worn that I need to replace like a uni or something to do with clutch..? Only thing I do is grease the tailshaft every 5k when I do the oil and air filter standard service..
