Scan gauge coolant temperatures?

Postby ryanmorris on Tue, 01 Feb 2011 2:00 +0000

Hey guys i recently bought a scan gauge and just got back from my first trip with it and i was curious to know what coolant temps some other diesels are running. It was roughly around 38 degrees ambient temperature and in town (50-60km/h) it runs 84 to 86 degrees, highway cruising (100-110km/h) it ran 87 to 90 it varied on wind speed and outside temp and up a short steep hill at 100km it hit 95. Is this normal for the diesel or should i be checking it out also note that the factory gauge never moved from just below half and i have my scangauge refresh rate set to fast so it would show any slight fluctuations. Any comments would be great guys

I love the Scangauge. You can read the after intercooler air temperature as well. Select gauge > and with one button scroll till it display IA (Intercooled Air). Done some checks on this. On any day temperature it will display the same as outside air temp or 1 degree higher. Shut the engine down and see how the temperature rise as the engine warms the intercooler!

Cool i didnt think it was anything to worry about its just something to get used to now i can physically see something other than a gauge needle that never moves. And it has been hot got to 41 degrees on wed :o But i cannot praise the scan gauge enough took 15mins to install , no tools and tells you so much. The x gauge turbo boost is pretty cool too!

Those coolant temps sound fine mate. I run the same temps day to day. I did however have to tow a 2.5 ton boat up some steep hills with the aircon flat out on Aus day (43 deg) and my coolant showed 108 deg as the highest it got. Again, the factory needle didnt move

Can you get the sack guage to read boost pressure?

Yes the scan gauge2 has a feature called X gauge that you program into it and it shows boost pressure approximately as it uses a calculation. I think it subtracts atmospheric pressure from the manifold pressure to show you approx. boost. You can also have an x gauge of KW being used.

Is it right that for the 05 and 06 models you need the smart gauge not the scangauge?

Thanks for that link, I had a quick look at that this morning and wasn't sure if that's how everyone has purchased their unit!
Also where has everyone put there screen?

Yep! I have both and the Scan Gauge doesn't work in my '05 D4D as they don't have the same OBDII compliance as the newer models, despite having the same plug. I wish the design of the Smart Gauge was more like the Scan Gauge, as its a bit bulky, but I am very happy with mine, especially the adjustable warning lights/alarms.

Having a poverty pack - SR without the trip meter i can now use scangauge to get these readings plus many many more and its more accurate than the standard sr5 computer trip. Im using the xgauge function to display the tank-distance to empty value which is really good to know aswell as its working it out in real time.

My temps go from 86-88 normal driving and up to 90-92 with the foot down, running the vmn chip too so i think yours safe too
60% of the time, it works every time

So with the guage are you showing multiple figures at the one time, or is it just a single figure and have to skip through to the value you want to see?

Jack, a max of 3 are shown on the Smart Gauge and 4 on the ScanGauge. The ScanGauge is better in that respect as you can choose each figure you want in each corner of the display, whereas the Smart Gauge has set displays of three different figures, which is okay but may not give you the figures you want on the same display.

Yea right oh, scan guage definately sounds like the way to go! Having 4 parameters you can choose to display is great. Than you can look at what you want!!
I would have boost, coolant temp, and maybe 2 in reference to the fuel....

So where does everyone have the display for the guage?
