Alloy gull wing canopy

General discussion of basically anything Hilux related

Picked up my M2O canopy a couple of weeks ago. On the whole I am pretty happy with it... BUT....DO NOT expect their communication skills to translate to what you ordered! I asked for a spare wheel holder in the centre of the rear panel with the wheel sitting on, and supported by, the tray as I wanted the canopy 150mm shorter than the tray. They planted this "object" they called a spare wheel carrier way off to one side of centre and about 100mm above the tray! It has two angled sides... different angles each side.... and a hunk of offcut square section of ally welded underneath ".just in case". the doors would seal very well and be very weatherproof if the rubber seals came anywhere near the other part of the panel. I have new rubbers of an appropriate size on order through my local marine business.

Edited to add:

Their canopies as basically supplied are very good quality and the prices are very reasonable it is just the communication difficulties that are a problem. When I bought my single cab HiLux I ordered an aluminium canopy from that mob in Bayswater Vic. I ordered a spare wheel carrier for the back. The spare carrier was ordered to be in the centre of the rear panel with the wheel to be supported by the 150mm tray overhang. I collected the canopy only a few weeks before I was off on my 3 week trip through the Flinders, across the Simpson etc. and I had drawers to build, carpet to lay etc etc.
The spare wheel was on an odd shaped (and I do mean ODD!) bracket, was out of level, had a chunk of rhs welded roughly under it. The wheel was 300mm off centre and about 120mm above the tray! The company assured me that when I returned from my trip that they would rectify the problems... OK, last week I had to travel to Melbourne to work at the Wood Show so I dropped it in to the makers. I collected it after it was "Fixed" and I was quite happy with the new carrier, EXCEPT. the back panel now has large scars where they cut the old schidt off! Yesterday, when cleaninhg the swarf and junk out that they left behind I found large cuts in the carpet from ultrathin cut off wheels in an angle grinder.... The basic canopy is fine but their repairs leave big heaps to be desired'

Avoid!

rant over.... now I will go cry in my beer....

Alloy gull wing canopy

Postby BEN_SR on Sun, 15 Jul 2012 7:23 +0000

Yeah I got one from M2O as well and found the communication a bit poor. Found the best way is to request a 3D CAD drawing of the canopy before deposit.

A few emails later and it all was sorted out. I asked for a rear wheel carrier and got a reinforced section of the canopy where I could put bolts through. I might get something else which is a bit more heavy duty before I hang a tyre off it doing 100km/hr on a corrugated road.

Chuck a pic up mate. Would like to compare canopies.

Cheers,

Chris.

Does wobble a bit, not to bad, would of preferred to have it sitting down lower on shorter brackets but the awning needs to be that high to clear the canopy door when it's open. Thought about making either telescopic or swing down brackets for when I'm mobile but in the end was all getting to messy so just went basic beacket with a little flex.

Yeah mines similar but my canopy is longer so I was able to get a brace out over the roof a bit with the tent between.

Cheers,

Chris.

To ressurect an old post, I've never seen these drop down fridge sliders. Can you buy these or do you have to make one?

Try here mate

They are a great idea, work well. But they are heavy and take up lots of room compared to traditional fridge slide.

hey you guys that have gone with mw toolboxes, how are they fairing after a few years? im in the market for one, but have only visited the mw stores here in brisbane, and honestly i thought the finished product they were selling wasnt worth saving a grand or 2 compared to other similar companies ive looked at. poor welding, uneven gaps at doors, all the locks on their display models are broken, etc

If your in Brisbane give Tong metal a go. Had mine close to a year now and I still loving it. Prices are reasonable and quality is great.

About to order my MW from Sydney, but need to finish the tray first,

The only thing ive been told to watch out for is the locking handles - the duel system can stuff up and if anything is dislodged from inside and falls to were the handle is basically you have to bust it to open it, a better option is a single t handle but use the garage door type mech. then nothing can jamb up also provideds extra security harder for somone to just bend the sided up.

But will need to discuss all this when I order it with them.
If I have anything Good to Say it will be Above.

Big change Cuzo. My mw canopy is 4 or so years old now and has seen heaps of corrogated rough tracks. No signs of cracking or anything. The only thing i recently changed was the hinges. The piano hinges gave me the shits being loud and letting water in when the door is open. So i cut the door down to suit a centerflex continuous hinge. Get it built into your new canopys its heaps better.

Cheers,

Chris.

I'm pretty happy with my m2o canopy.
as Doorstop said, communication can be an issue.
As Cuzo said, the 3 way door handles can be jammed close if something falls on them.
Also, I do get leaks in heavy rain

I'm going to replace the hinges the same as Chris at some point

Hey Mattym,
I've had my MW canopy for 7 years now and have only had to replace the gas struts and the locking handles.
It often carries lots of timber for work and has carried our 3.5 mtr tinnie to Moreton, strong enough to walk on.
The finishing and appearance of the welds DID look a bit off but no cracks or welds letting go just yet ;)

and that was why I went all the way to Melb for an m2o canopy. really good fit and finish

There was a massive difference in price when I had mine made 7 years ago.....mine cost around $2500 while most other mobs were well over $4k......
