Trays - Where do I find them? and who makes a good one?

Postby Quinny34 on Mon, 16 Feb 2009 12:14 +0000

Before I get started, 9W6VX this thread probably needs a section unde technical for "Running Gear / Form Work" or similar name for discusions on bullbars, side steps, sliders, Chrome Mack Dogs.... I'll leave it up to yourself...

Right,

Im about to get a new rig as mine is end of lease. I've pretty much convinced myself to go for a tray back rather than the tub as I cart motor bikes, camping gear and firewood frequently. The tub was great when the lux was the main family car, but the Mistress of War and Finance recently upgraded her 1.6L VW beetle to a VE 6L clubsport.... Needless to say we will now use this as the family mobile.

So, back to the tray... I've found it hard to get websites with good pictures and purchasing on these items within OZ...

Criteria,

Rollbar at the front
slide out ramp/table from the rear.
Toolboxes both sides at rear (No lower than tow bar)
Removable sides with tauneu cover.
Tie down rails

Wish List.
Would like to be able to fit a canopy over it at a later stage. By this I mean a canvas or similar canopy that I can bolt on and of relativly easily...
Color coded to the ute... (Still have not chosen a color yet)

From those that have had trays before is there anything I should look for in these?

Anything else I should include?

G'day Quinny,

I'm also in search of a tray for my extra cab at the moment. I 've had a couple of quotes up in Brisbane, which may not help much, but give a bit of an idea of numbers.

Had one quote from Gibson Tru Body in Brisbane and one From Ozmac industries in Toowoomba.

Gibson was $3541.50 which included a 2" tube headboard, checkerplate steel floor, ramp under tray, colour coded to car in two pack, with spring loaded overcentre catches for the drop sides. The ramp was $660.

Ozmac was $2995. They come standard with overcentre catches for the drop sides, which will stop the sides from rattling. Slightly more solid headboard, but still painted and with checkerplate floor. Timber floor was $365 more, and an under tray ramp was $800.

I had the same issue with web sites and no photos, I had to email both companies to get any good pics.

Hope this helps

Cheers
Roy

Also have a look at Minespec in Brissy. They have an awesome canopy/tray back that opens up with just posts in each corner, nothing to get in the way. Not cheap $7k. but given I spent $3k odd for my canopy, probably not bad.. Owned by ARB Southside and is right behind them.

Billux had a great one last trip to Levuka. It was a tipper. Made easy work unloading the fire wood.

I will findout what brand it was.

G'Day Quinny.

Here are some pics of my tray that i had made a few months ago. Its got a heavy duty checkerplate floor, lockable toolboxes at the rear, tie down rails, dropdown sides, canvas canopy, removable canopy frame. And it's going to have a water tank aswell.

Image

Image

The side and rear curtains roll up
Image

Image

The rear bar and the 3 bars you see here all slide out of place for when the canopy isn't on.
Image

The tray cost $3700 to get made, not including the canopy (My dad is an upholsterer, so it cost nothing :D )
I think it'll be hard to find a better built tray than these, he does a bloody good job of them.

I can give you the name and number of the bloke who makes them if you would like.

Cheers, Brendan

Can't think of the blokes name, sorry.

I'm sure he would be able to mod it in any way you wanted.

Hey Roy, the tray cost $4068.18 comes with 7 flush mount tiedown points, 3' headboard + removable 3" rearbar and 3 crossbars to suport a canopy, colour matched in 2pack grey, fitted aswell. I got a rubber mat from Minespec $200. ;)

Dave.

PS:
The best trays i found during my reserch was QLD Body builders QBB link here but they were a thousand bucks dearer  If money was no worries i would buy one of these. 8-)
