Dashcams... Who has them ? whats good ?

Postby Steve9R on Thu, 06 Mar 2014 8:51 +0000

Just been doing some research on dashcams as a possible replacement for my GoPro on the front (as its playing up)..

Been looking at the Blackvue DR-500GW with bluetooth so you can stream and review directly on your i-device/android without having to remove cards etc..

is anyone else running a dashcam at the moment ? what sort ? what issues have you had ?

Ive read a lot of people have had overheating problems with them being mounted at the top of the windscreen, and ive seen a few mods where have installed heatsinks etc to try to cool them down..

I haven't use the Blackvue but I have spoken with a guy who had one and reckons it is great. And there was video a while back of a guy thrashing a car when getting some suspension done which I believe was a Blackvue too.

yeah even a search on here for dashcam only yields 1 x message.. and that was from arrroow in his build thread saying he has a blackvue as well,

viewtopic.php?f=41&t=15089&p=236469

and looking at his picture of it, its the older 400 model that isnt available anymore (and was the one with the most problems apparently)..

Steve I got one that looks the same as this about 8 months ago after a recomendation from a Lcool forum member
Seems good so far, mine had a GPS with it so that you can plot on google maps apparently ( havn't tried that , you can show me how to do it if you get one) It also has arear camera that runs as PIP mode but records both images. I bought a32 gig card for it

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HD-Dual-Lens ... 431wt_1368

It looks the same as this but I got it from an Aussie Ebay seller

Best day and night quality, gps logger, low profile and lcd screen to view footage. Can run without external power too and not stupidly expensive.

I think these are a great idea, really interested to hear different opinions regarding brands and models, looking to purchase one very shortly.

I've got a VicoVation WF-1 - great vision, very unobtrusive on the windscreen... can be configured/controlled from a smartphone...

Have a Blackvue one that you are looking at Steve, it is excelent. Have ordered the same today for our Prado. Hope it will have it in time for trip away next Thursday.
Use 32mb cards in mine.
They do the same in a two cam system now as well.

Cheers

is it the DR500 ? have you had any of the overheating issues they complain about ? the new DR500s have vent holes, but i doubt that does much..

I like the bluetooth wifi idea, and the very small size..

I'm using a Dabonda Power DBR-3000F. Pretty reasonable picture quality (claims to be HD), has GPS capability (using an external GPS antenna) but no inbuilt screen ... although it does have an AV out port that I suppose you could attached to AV in on your head unit to view if necessary. Files saved to SD card and can be viewed on your PC either in their proprietary viewer (shows GPS, speed details, etc) or normal media player (video & sound only).

I must admit I had issues initially with the camera karking it after a firmware upgrade but the backup support was pretty good and very quick turnaround times on straight replacement.

Unit is only small and hides quite nicely behind the rear view mirror.

Cost was around the $300-mark, for the unit plus extra for GPS and "always on" power connector) but ANEONLINE the aussie distributors often have some pretty good specials.
Cheers,
Scuba Dooba

So has anyone actually 'needed' or 'used' this footage for anything ?

This is taken recently with the Blackvue Wi-Fi DR500GW on a rainy and overcast day running from a PowerMagic Pro uninterrupted power supply.

Prob come in handy in my area. So many morons don't know how to drive and cut out in front of you / other people on a daily basis. I wonder how they even get their license. Would have a heap of footage to show off.

Also curious to what's good and what price ranges you find for these.
Cheers,
Jay

hi Steve

Mine is a DR500GW-HD
Have had no troubles with it at all.
Powered on 24 7 off aux battery.
Had hot days 45plus and no problems, that I know of.
Only used mine to look at water flooding with the last rain.
Had a couple of near misses but never looked at it as no drama's,

Cheers

Hi Team,
I run the Navman dash cam with 2 " screen.............not a bad bit of gear, it has a motion sensor and G- shock sensor for collisions....pretty good quality video too...
It's amazing how often you find yourself downloading a close call with some idiot...but then I do drive from the Goldie to Bris most days....

I have a cheep one and it works well for what I want...

32 gig and has the usual ability to lock a file on demand.

1: one fool on a push bike in the middle of the clem 7

2: More than a few close calls - plenty where I have been slow off the mark and some one has run a red light...

3: A few accidents in front of me

4: 2 x road rage where people have lost it and started a punch up

5: Great shot of a lighting flash - grabbed a few frames before and after. Amazing what the eye misses.

Dashcams... Who has them ? whats good ?

Postby singlespeed on Tue, 25 Mar 2014 4:22 +0000

After researching these cameras for a while I settled on the Powerucc Panorama II, mainly because it gets great reviews, uses a Sony Exmor sensor, and is compatible with Mac (viewing software). It's very easy to install the cabling for the camera and the GPS receiver because of the gaps in the side pillars and headliner. From the driver seat it's hardly visible anyway. The installation is very clean, I opted to go under the mirror rather on the side because I wanted to be able to access the buttons/menus without hassle.

I'd like to see how others have installed them as well.

Here's mine:
