For those of you with the K&N Recovery plates I suggest the use of a bridle strap. This was a snatch recovery in mud and as my car slid sideways the plate bent.

Just to note, Warren was only recovering another Hilux (Me). It's not like it was a three and half tonne Land Cruiser or Patrol. Definitely use the bridal or equaliser.

Cheers

Guys if you are going to use a bridle, make sure the angle of the bridle is less than 60 Deg.. otherwise you will pull the two points together.. the longer the bridle(greater the angle) the better. its like haveing a long A frame to lessen the inwards pull.. I hope that is clear enough.. Cheers TOMUCH

Remind me again on why this thing, (that needs a bridal), is better than using the factory tow points with a bridal..........................

Factory tow points are not recommended for snatch recovery officially by Toyota even if using a bridle strap. bending is better than seperating. However I will be investigating other options.

Personally, I use the factory points, & have never had any issues. Main thing, is to only have 2m of slack in the snatchstrap.............

So, we are replacing a non-rated factory item, with a non-rated aftermarket item.............:-) :-)

I need to ponder that for a bit.........!!

The difference is that the factory item makes the statement "do not use for snatch recovery".

I undertook the exercise in an attempt to improve the hooks - it has not proven to be a big improvement.

Doug I could not find anywhere on their site where they state that. COuld you post link?

Other thing to be aware of, is that a lot of the aftermarket stuff that is actually 'rated', is only rated to 10,000lbs...........

10,000lbs = 4500kg only. Remember that most common snatch-straps are rated to 8,000kg.....

Guess where the 'weakest link' is in the equation here............

Only putting this in to give people something to think about.

Cheers.

Looks like the plates are cryng out for a brace (eg an angle iron) along the top side to stop this happening.

4Hilux, not sure if you are quite right, but don't know enough to argue with you. I thought the hooks (like the D shackles) had a Safe Working Load of 4500 kg which implies the breaking strain is about 3 x the SWL and the Snatch strap had a 8000kg breaking strain leaving the strap as the weak point. Somebody will know more about rigging and lifting than I do..

Hi Rod - I'm not sure either - I'm just going off what it actually stamped on stuff I've seen. Re SWL / WLL etc - I'm fairly sure its only stuff thats used in a 'lifting' capabilty, that has to have a 3 x safety margin over whats stamped in it. Hence, thats why 3.25T WLL shackles don't break / deform till well in excess of 10T loads being applied. This safety margin, is what makes a 3.25T shackle fine for snatch recoveries.
