Sr vs Sr5

Postby taresk on Sun, 17 Jun 2012 9:01 +0000

Hi guys, I've done a few searches but can't seem to find the info I'm looking for. I haven't made my way into the seat of a Hilux yet, but I'm not too far off.

So what I would like to know, are the differences between the two grades SR & SR5 purely cosmetic? ie: different tub, no flares, less chrome, no carpet, etc. Or is there more to it, ie: different drive ratios, different overall wheel/tyre size, stuff like that.

I have a good idea of what I want to do with it, and most of the SR5 bling would be replaced anyway, plus I like the convenience of vinyl floors. From a modification standpoint, SR leaves me more funds to make it fun, but I want to make sure it doesn't add more challenges.

Cheers, Taresk (Mark)

Hey Mark.
What year model do you want to buy? New or second hand?
Going off my model, an '07. One of the most outstanding features of it is the Vinyl floor and I would down spec an SR5 to have a vinyl floor..

Thats the same reason i went the SR over the SR5, lower cost and vinyl floor :) i still have the SR5 tub which you can pick up off ebay for a between 200 to 500 and the SR5 flares but appart from that there isnt really anything in the SR5 that i wanted.
I didnt feel the need for electric mirrors since im the only person that drives the car and the CD player will be replaced with a DVD. The only advantage the SR5 has that i would like was option to engage low range without engaging the front diff (after a small mod)

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I was looking at an 07-10 roughly, budget of about 35k. I'm not worried about the tub, I won't be fitting a canopy, so don't really need the smooth sided SR5 version. The main thing I was concerned with is the drive ratios, because I'm going to be fitting 33's (only way I can get my favourite tyre), and was worried that the SR might have smaller diameter stock tyres, meaning different gearing.

I bought a Sr d/c, as I wanted a bare basic 4wd,the only thing mine hasn't got which id like is ABS,mine had electric windows, mirrors from factory??? And now sr5 flares, rear speakers which is more or less what an sr5 is but with vynle floors(which i wanted)
Then the more time you spend on this site the more $$$ you'll spend on your truck.
There's plenty our there to choose from,do your research.

You have 2 issues to look at the first is money - if its no object go the Sr5, has a few more luxuries and there's nothing wrong with that (like having cruise control). If your wanting to go off roading and want to build it up a bit go the Sr and save the extra coin and put that into mods. (when I bought it was about 10k difference and that was 2nd hand) IMO. Im running 33s on a 2010 Sr with after market flares.
Either way its a Hilux so you made the right choice.
Good luck with your purchase.

Haha, that's the main reason I started looking at SR models, for a truck with reasonable k's on the clock an SR means I can read the site sponsor threads more often ;)

while there are times I'd like vinyl floors, I'd still choose the SR5 every time

better tub, ADD, VSC/TSC, ABS, airbags, bigger wheels

from new there was less than 5k price difference for me, so it was an easy choice

Thanks, if you can run the 33's on standard gearing then it's all good, I'm switching back from two cars to one, so I needed one that can do it all, Hilux was the obvious choice, so the drop in rego/ insurance costs will open up the mod budget, and I'm limiting myself to 35k, so that the monthly payments will leave plenty for the extras. If I can get it set up to work as well as my old Prado did, I'll be happy as a pig in... mud :D

I'm not concerned with the lack of ADD or ABS, and this model wouldn't have VSC/ TCS anyway.

Have a good read through this thread viewtopic.php?f=27&t=3538&hilit=fitting+33s#p42782
In my opinion you need more than a 2 inch lift for running a 33 or 285 75 16, otherwise it looks like the front flare is almost sitting on the wheel, I have an ARB delux (heavy)bar, winch and dual Batts. If you had an xrox and no extras you might get away with it, and watch the offset of the rims you purchase as well.

Other than LSD (SR doesn't have?), ADD (a Huge benefit to my mind, i love being able to drop in and out of 4wd on the fly ... and often when doing a lot of beach vs track vs beach work it's very handy, plus ADD properly disengages the front diff reducing fuel load and wear n tear) , bigger Tub with smoother sides & tub liner and tie down hooks x 4, trip computers, cruise control, electric mirrors, electric windows, stereo controls on steering wheels, Opti-Tron dashboard cluster (don't think the SR5 D4d gets this though anyway, only V6, I think!) ... the rest is cosmetic stuff (chrome mirrors, door handles, flares, carpets) .. oh and sat nav touch screen (this is only a factory option for SR5 anyway).

I'm happy to go for an SR5 if I find one that ticks all the boxes, although I am after the rarest of versions, a manual V6 dual cab. Seems all the good ones are either autos or diesel, not a fan of either.

Tub space isn't a major issue, as I had just planned on filling it with drawers, LSD, no prob, was going to have lockers anyway. Cruise control, yeah that's good value, but there are aftermarket kits if it comes to that.

Yeah, the lift will be more than 2", I'm considering a mish-mash of ICON components (as I had on my Prado) and MR gear, giving me 3" in the front, and a little over 2" in the back. From what i've read here 0 offset rims seems to be the go for 33's on this model.

This is probably the most thought i've put into modding a vehicle before i've actually bought it, I usually make it up as I go.

If you ever need to do a comparison between 2 (or more) vehicles on specs, head to the Redbook website (http://www.redbook.com.au/). You can search for the models you want to compare and it lines up all the specs next to each other, so it's easy to see what's different between the two vehicles.
There is no such thing as a stupid question.

I think it'll come down to just being patient, waiting either for a good SR5 or an SR with the options boxes ticked, every time I've bought a car in the past, within a week or two something far better showed up, lol. I just have to learn not to jump at the first shiny one I see :)

Either way, I've still gotta finish preparing my jeep for sale, once that's gone I can start the serious searching

it all comes down to personal preference and what extras you prefer. I has the sr while my uncle had the sr5 and there isn't much difference

I'm actually leaning toward SR again, seems for some reason that the brand new SR's (demos well below RRP) are about the same price as a clean SR5 with around 100k on the clock, slotting nicely into my budget, and the mods will cover any shortfall the SR has in equipment.
I was initially concerned about canopy options with the J deck tray, until I found out how easily you can source an A deck tray from dealerships and tray-builder workshops.
It's taking me longer than expected to prepare the Jeep for sale, but I'll be in a Hilux by years end for sure :D
