New hilux owner - best canopy?

Postby aaronpricey on Thu, 22 Dec 2011 10:13 +0000

Hi there
i have just ordered my first hilux SR5 model, wont get it till March (spewing) but at least it gives me time to save for Accessories.
the main item i wanna buy it a Canopy, i didn't like the toyota ones, so i'm doing some shopping around for aftermarket ones.
wanted one with a single handle, one sliding window (give the dogs some fresh air) and one lifting window.
anyone got some sugestions, reviews & recomendations, i'm in the newcastle nsw area.
cheers

Hi mate,

having recently gone through the process of looking at different new canopies i went with a Flexiglass Flexisport canopy with roof racks, for $3k.

It's made in Thailand and is a rebadged "flake" brand.

It has the batman lockable side windows, is perfectly sealed.

Marine carpet lined. Has a window opening to clean the back window of lux.

The rear door is centrally locked, and looks good.

Comes with the builtin LED lighting (nice and bright).

I wanted something that looked good, aswell as being very functional ... none of the cheaper stuff came close, and i most definately didn't want to bang on a nasty looking (cheap) canopy ... and totally kill the look of the car.

I also was looking at CarryBoy, but they did not have a rep in WA and were sloppy in getting back to me.

Get someting that compliments your car mate, don't cheapen it with a bad fit (like some matyes of mine have)

These pics i paste straight out of the "my Rig" thread for ya ;

i was looking at CarryBoy also, as they look pretty good, i sent them an email as there is no rep in my area and they got back to me the same day, they send the canopy to me and a organise a local installer to fit at my house.
i am pretty tempted unless anyone can tell me something bad about them.

Hi Mate
I just put a razorback canopy on my New 2011 Hilux. I believe it's the best on the market. Very well built. Central locking, interior light, rear demister and the roof is lined. The canopy is rated to carry a 100kg. I can post some picks if you like?
Cheers Rob

Make sure you assess whether you want slide windows or open up batman style windows (like mine)

i would like one of each window so i can drive with the sliding window open to give the dogs some fresh air,
and have the batman lifting window for when camping.
flexi glass sport only comes in lift up windows.

was thinking the razor back would be to heavy as its made from steel?

anyone seen or have a EGR canopy?
i went to TJM and the sales man loast his load over how good they are and bagged the razorback.
then another dealer said there are not the best canopy out there, but for the price they are pretty good.

they just dont give heaps of info on their website, which is pushing me away back to a carryboy.

I think the ARB ones have a batman on one side and slide on the other ... only brand i've seen that has both.

But, I found the ARB ones don't look good ... no idea why, they just look a bit fat and dont seem to flow with the vehicle ... but that's just my taste / opinion.

A bit of air for the dog in the back would definately be a good reason for slider ... and also if youre sleeping in it you can crack the window a bit.

Our dog doesnt go in the back so non issue fo rus. But when sleeping ... we tend to just open the batman window a little bit ... and we're in process of getting some flyscreen/mosquito net and velcro edging so we can have them open without the annoying mozzies.

ARB ones can be configured however you like them to be... you could have double lift up windows and for $35 ea you can get pop up vents that let air in and out... i'd more than likely go for 4 pop vents and 2 lift up windows.. far more functional and satisfies all criteria

I have to agree, I to don't like the look of the ARB canopies
At the moment it's either Carryboy or ERG, unless some has some more info on others
I looked at ironman ones also but not a fan, so to those that might have one of the above mentioned, I personally just don't like them, each to his own!

I have an Avenger Workstyle canopy and it is very user friendly. Gull wing type doors all around for full access and slam type catches. It is reasonably high, although about the same as the ARB one, which is perfect for me as i need to crane or fork engines in and out of the rear.

The thing that it lacks is a central locking feature. I was in Flexiglass recently and saw their new canopy range has central locking and the price when i enquired was about $2700 from memory.

I have to say that the neatest canopy by far is the Razorback one, but it is also the most expensive.

The majority of canopies i looked at, that had been manufactured in a mould, had very varying levels of fitting accuracy, and if you talk to people who fit them then there is no such thing as a perfect one.

It is worth keeping an eye on any specials from Caddy as they regularly selloff excess or old stock. That was how i got mine. $2400 fitted by a mate who was a caddy reseller. I am still very happy with mine.

Regards
Chris

Go the Razorback. We looked around when we got ours Amd nothing else came close. Its all tell, slam latches on the rear door, central locking on back door and roof holds our roof too tent without any extra supports. I wouldn't go with anything else even if its a bit pricey. I reckon'we'paid about $3600 fitted for ojrs at Opposite Lock.

Razorbacks do look good, I was worried about the weight of the canopy though?
And also with the vinyl lining it might get damaged with camping gear and dogs etc.

Other than that I do like them they have all the same features as flexiglass as well, demister & central locking.
