Can anyone suggest how to improve fuel economy, or is toyota advertising false claiming you get fuel economy of 8.9 litres 100klm.
I have 3litre, 2009 Turbo Diesel, Manual extra cab. Has bullbar, tray, 225R16 tyres. These will reduce economy slightly, but surely not to the extent of using an extra 4 litres per 100klm which adds up overtime. I only get 530klm before putting another 68 litres of fuel in, consistently driving at 100klm/hour. Vehicles has done 58,000klm so past the 'give it a while to break in' stage. Are snorkels a benefit? (snorkel manufacturers/sellers need not reply).

Chip it chip and 3" exhaust, stock with those mods I get between 4 to 6.5 lts per 100 on the freeway.

i get 8.5-9.5l/p100k, 50/50 city/fwy, my last trip to qld, 3 adults and the back full, stock tyres, no power mods, just b/bar and about 50kg of stereo, i averaged 9.2l/p100k sitting on 110-120k/hr over the 1800km

i do the best economy at 80kms low7/100kms

Thanks guys, I must have a bad model, are yours dual cabs? As I have been told some extra cabs are geared lower which increases fuel consumption. There is no way I get anywhere near your fuel economy. I have spoken to 4 other extra cab owners recently and they all said they only get between 450 to 550 klm per tank as well.

Your figures sound normal to me. I never got more than that.

Take the specs with a grain of salt. I think it is based on a standard test which may be a bare engine. Every bit of bar work and external mod affects fuel economy and your tray will make quite a difference and be worse than style side.

Mine - '09 SR-5 auto, dual cab, steel bar, canopy, aux battery, 50 litre fridge and perhaps 20 kg's heavy copper cabling - absolutely stock running gear and engine OEM fittings.

best ever 7.2 l/100 (not over 80 km/h and wringing every metre out of fuel - coasting where possible, momentum used to ride out undulating ground).

Around town - 10's or 11's - with absolutely no sprints, not over 2,000 rpm's.

Normal highway - light truck, speeds never over 100 km/h... mid 8's to low 9's

Towing max weight, full frontal caravan - averaged 14.5 over 24,500 km's.
Speed mainly at 87 km/h.... higher on days with tail wind - much lower with headwind, 4th gear used when possible to hold lock-up. 3rd selected on climbs or in headwind.

My observations and understandings are that anything over 100 km/h causes a sharp increase in consumption.

All above figures calculated by GPS and actual fuel used (pump).... don't be tricked into believing what your dash readout displays... fit a Scangauge and calibrate it to fuel pump readout and GPS odometer..... dash read-out is very generous...

I'd like to see 8ltrs with 3"exhaust ,chip, but seriously doubt 4-6ltr out of Any hilux.

I have an x cab, the gearing is the same in all manuals, and same in all autos. The biggest thing is not to go off what the dash computer says. Work out your kms off a gps and then how much fuel you have to add. The speedo's are out as much as 10% in some. Mine with all the bars, hilift, winch, recovery gear, air con always on, 33x12.5 tyres, 3in lift, i was geting 10's and 11's but with 3in exhaust and steinbauer chip i get 8's to 9's now. Also try cleaning your maf sensor there is a topic in it in here.

Agree, I don't think any vehicle lives up to it's claimed fuel efficiency in the real world

My ss was better then what holden claimed as long as i didnt get it to her... hilux is worse then what toyota reckon though i put some injector cleaner in my hilux the other day got bit better fuel out of the last tank might just be by chance though

I have an extra cab my fuel figures so far have been around the 10 to 11 ltrs per hundred with a roof top tent on as well..i also have a 2 3/4 exhaust and a steinbauer chip.they have certainly helped.

have you reset your mileage thingy on the dash board?? mine gets less ks per tank now than it did when i bought it

Yep, 11's, sometimes 12ish if hoofing it down the highway at Northern Territory speed limits. Doesnt matter a stuff if you knock off diesel from work, of course.....

Drew, you are claiming 8's & 9's. If we say 8.5 this would equate to about 11.7k's/ltr or 890k's out of a 76ltr tank. Wow, could this be true?? I have spoken to quite a few people about the D4 and the most I have heard of is 750k's on a tank or just under 10k's/ltr. Some guys tell me they only get 550k's on a tank. It seems that figures can vary greatly. I would love to have a load of real world figures to calc. some averages. I drive a 4ltr and I'm always interested in the economy debate.

we cant compare sr's to sr5's
sr models are turning the front diff
sr5 models have ADD- automatic /disengaging /differential in the front
to the best of my limited knowledge

put a snorkel and K&N filter on it the other day. made no difference whatsoever. snorkel is noisy as hell and rattles from wind hitting head piece when doing 97 - 100+ klm/hr. Still 550 klm to the tank. will wait til warranty expires before putting a chip in it. from reading reviews the chip is a gamble, as money you save on fuel over 200,000 klm you will spend double that on fixing things that overheat/malfunction down the track due to not being manufactured to constantly perform under those conditions. Might be easier to sell it and buy a V6 petrol for that type of performance.
