drum brakes/hand brake

Postby sdrob on Fri, 25 Mar 2011 6:21 +0000

hello i have a 2010 sr5 dual cab and have done under 5k km( 3mths old) and my hand brake has to click 7 times( 9 is the max) before it will hold the car still. when i brake it feels like the rear brakes aren't doing anything, abs cuts in when i brake hard but not what i would call excessive. any sugestions for when i go in and see toyota service department on monday. from what i have read the rear drums are suposed to be self adjusting which is known to be a bit of a mythical creature. was told by cmi toyota i have to take it back to where i bought the car from as it wouldn't be covered under toyota warranty, peter kittle told me they need the car for half a day to solve the problem... any ideas
cheers sean

The brake proportioning value sounds like it needs to be adjusted more towards the rear.

Have them adjust the shoes on the drums while there at it

My handbrake is the same as yours since new and I have same concerns. I have done 8k but the brakes started grabbing really well at 6k - sometimes too well. Maybe they just need to bed in a bit

my brother jumped in the lux up at zigzag on sunday for a short drive about 20 metres.

His first comment was the brakes felt spongey to which I agreed but as I drive it everyday I did not really notice it that much until his comment.

I find after a service the brakes/hand brake work well for about a week but after that they turn to shit. I always say its the trusty hand brake which I'll live with but the brakes are of concern.

I can not get the wheels to lock up (SR so no ABS) at all on the blacktop in the dry I even feel as if the pedal bottoms out. once its rained or I'm on the dirt the wheels will lock with about 2/3 of the pedal pressure.

I have bleed the brake lines to no avail before to remove the spongey feeling thinking there was air in the line some where but got nothing.

It going in for a service on Tuesday so will got them to look at it.

Jiggins

change your pads and rotors

DBA slotted or slotted/crossdrilled and TRW pads(i use these)

mine brakes perfectly now (sr v6 06) wet ,dry , gravel etc i can even lock up when i want to

i did matske's (sr5 ) rotor and pad upgrade the other week (ultimate kit) he loves it

Did pad change/rear shoe adjustment (Trw pads only) for Sean72 two days ago
he rings me and says he owes me a smack on the head

i think what have i messed up when i did his lux

he goes into intersection and car pulls out on him he applies a footful of brakes thinking that they were the same as before ie standard SR5 110,000ks pads rotors etc but no

the brakes actually work now and he promply hits his head on top of screen

so i think F@#K toyota mate and just replace rotors and pads and adjust rear shoes and you will laughing
