Build/modify slider steps

Postby Macca on Sat, 10 Oct 2009 3:55 +0000

My home made sliders touched the Cabin body of the ute when I hit a washout etc. They needed to be relocated away from the body, so I took a few pics for those who might like to make some.

Jack ute up and be safe, you will spend a bit of time under there

Disconnect battery, for safe welding including auxillary

Also unplug any thing you can find, behind glove box in this case. Overkill? yes, Safe? yes.

You can see where the bracket hits
Image

Supported, I used a couple of Koppers, strapped to chassis with ratchet straps
Image

Got the grinder out and cut them off
Image

Cleaned up ready for new brackets
Image

They were made using steam pipe and manufactured bends
Image

Clamp in place after packing to correct hieght and width
Image

Hold bracket in place and tack weld
Image

Ready to go back in
Image

In place
Image

Better clearance

You can lift the side, both wheels off the ground with these. Great sliders and roof access

Thanks guys

All the pipe is 4mm wall 40mm square or round, the plates for attaching to chassis is 10mm thick, High tensile 12mm bolts with nylocks, Ally sheet is 3mm rivited and siliconed to frame to stop rattles.

Clamped ally to frames and using a soft face hammer shaped it around pipe.

Rear bracket has a plate each side of chasis and 4 bolts

Mid has a plate that is bolted to side of chassis, 1 bolt that I drilled a hole for.

Front has a "pickle fork look" and used the bolts on the gear box cross arm support, enlarged bolt holes to take 12mm HT bolts.

I fitted all the brackets to the chassis, tack welded where necessary. Locate step then make next part of bracket (leaving 20mm clearance) and tack weld in place.

You want a good number of tacks cause it has to stay togeather when you take it off ute.

Then weld everything in the shop where you can get at the joins.

Clean up, Paint and Install

I first made these nearly 4 years ago and cost about $240.00 all up.

They have been "used" and show no sign of damage aside from scratches and lost paint. AND they do work as sliders.

Bit of an over kill I agree.

Hi Macca,

Did you have to relocate any fuel lines/brake lines for the passenger side rear bracket near the tank? I was just having a look under my vehicle this afternoon and the space near the tank is very limited.
