Hello all,

I thought I would introduce myself.

Upgraded from a 2001 Forester GT to a 2012 Hilux about September 2015.

End goal for the Hilux is to be setup for touring with the odd 4x4 weekends.

Will hopefully be a good part time member of the forum and post my progress as it comes.

This is the progress so far.


When it was still shiny


First trip out to Wedge Point & Jurien Bay


Modding time - Installing Ironman 4x4 Snorkel


Found a good set of 265/75/R16's on Gumtree to swap over for weekends and trips away.


Fits with stock suspension


Up past Mundaring


First blunder, wheel came off after not checking nuts after rattle gun. took out panel and dented door


sourced 2nd hand guard and replaced.

After 2: TJM HD Suspension lift


Installed my RTT, couldnt fit in/out of the shed so I put it on a hinge (also good for driving)

Also thought I would share the ladder rack me and the old man whipped up with his exhaust bender.

Thought I would add this to my build thread also..

Completed the top end EGR clean.

Bit of a pic beforehand


You can inspect the EGR valve after removing just the intercooler.


Was a little clogged but not too bad.



After a bit of carby cleaner and some dish washing liquid.




While I was at it I thought I would give the intercooler a bit of the same treatment as it had a decent lining of oil on the inside, the black liquid was some of the degreaser after I gave it a can or two.


Anyway I thought I would share my experience.

After buying a new house there hasn't been much to update on the lux recently.

But I have been accumulating some touring gear to make it ever so closer to being self sufficient.

Some progress with the electrical install for the Hilux this week.

I'm trying to keep the tray free from canopies or boxes as I seem to be using the whole tray alot more that I thought.

I will most likely cover the wood with some carpet and have a power point, switches and relays on there too...

Finished the Overhaul of the AUX Battery setup and got all the wiring sorted on the weekend, panel behind the seat works perfectly, and Ctek seems to be fully opperational.

I have a question though, I have a 40A relay running the 1200W peak/600W constant inverter, is this going to cope with the load going through to it? According to the load the Inverter should be pulling it should, but it just looks soo small.

1200W peak / 12 volts = 100 amps peak current
A 40 amp fuse would normally be a slow burn fuse so a better spec may be based on the constant wattage:
600W continuous / 12 volt = 50 amps

Thus, 40A fuse is under specced unless your wiring is unable to cope with more than 40A.

Yeah I thought something like that, I mean I will most likely never be using the full 600W but I guess I should upgrade the wiring and relay if I want to use it more.. I only have 50A wiring running to the inverter as well..

What have people done to switch their inverters to turn them off and on remotely?

Starting on the canopy for the tray,

Keeping it only 600mm high so it can squeeze into the shed.

Had some old Ikea LED strips lying around, turns out they are 12v so theyre going in. I found the LED stips I has were too bright.

I've opened up the inverter and paralleled the internal switch with another switch on the dash, allowing either switch to turn it on.

Cheers mate, a bit of work and a pain to bolt to the rear but worth it. You wouldn't even know it was there.

Canopy is mostly finished now. or at least it's good to use
All up it cost around $300-$400 for all the materials

I like the swing out door. A drop down shelf on there for the cooker and you’ve got a great kitchen area. Looks the goods.

Put some legs on the canopy, missed having the tray when I need it. and also becoming immobile when camping.

Legs work pretty well, I butchered some jockey wheels to wind up and down. It's a little wobbly as the jockey wheels have a bit of play in them. but seems pretty strong considering I didn't brace the corners. I wouldnt want to sleep in the RTT with only the legs as it may get seasick but it wouldnt be hard to rest it back on the tray at night
