Dan's 14 SR5 Build

Postby whitey89 on Thu, 18 Sep 2014 6:03 +0000

Hey guys

Well after selling the last Hilux early 2011, buying a twin locked 75 on an 80 series chassis on 35s with no air con, selling that, buying a dirt bike (currently for sale if you're keen) and an R1 (definitely not for sale) I've finally got my butt back into a Hilux! Well almost, it should be delivered around the 18th of October. :D :D :D

I got the new Graphite colour that replaces the Charcoal (essentially the same) after having a silver one, didn't want the same colour twice, in the diesel too coz who doesn't love a turbo whistle and auto because I'm getting lazy in my old age.

Figured I'd get my first post underway to keep track of its progress and also get a bunch of input from you guys too. Not that my wallet needs any more help.

With a month up my sleeve I've hit up eBay, which on Sunday night to celebrate their 15th birthday, they were giving 15% off everything. I managed to pick up a
* Redarc BCDC 1225LV
* Provent 200
* Fuel Manager 30 Micron Prefilter
* GME TX3540S
* GME AE4705 in dark grey
* AOB Winch Power, Winch In/Winch Out and Air Compressor Red/Green LED Switches

Saved myself a bit over $220, cheers eBay ;)

Also picked up a Warn Zeon 10s for $1500AUD delivered from the states including the whopping $54.10 shipping and all import charges. eBay global shipping program is awesome.

Some of it has started to arrive too!

Also getting an MSA Drop Slide off the boys at The Ute Shop.

When I pick the car up in October I'll be dropping it off for a bunch of accessories
* ARB Deluxe Winch Bar
* Kaymar Rear Bar
* Outback Drawers
* Dual Batteries
* ARB Canopy
* ARB Compressor

That's about emptied my wallet for now but before Christmas want to have suspension and tyres done. Looking at the CalOffroad 3" tour pack with the adjustable height bilteins or a cut down version of that combined with Rekon front struts - basically after the height adjustability over the front end so when it inevitably sags a bit I can easily wind it up.

Re the tyres, looking at the ATZ P3s or the STMaxx in a 265x70x17. Can't decide though, I had MTZ's before and wasn't a fan of them, so leaning towards something new in the STMaxx.

That's about it, pictures and lots more to follow :twisted:

Well a quick update, the hilux should be ready to pick up this Friday or Saturday!!! Then i drop it off for the tyres on Monday and the accessories hopefully in the next couple of weeks.

Ended up ordering the STMaxx, got a wicked deal combining a trade in on the stock tyres so looking forward to something different. Because I'm trading the tyres though I won't be able to drive it too much between picking it up and and taking it to the tyre shop...least I can look at it I guess.

Also contacted CalOffroad and a tour pack should be arriving shortly. Also jumped on a sale price of the XRay 220 90w HIDs. $400 cheaper than the genesis 210s in 50w HID and he reckoned they're a good product.

Getting close now, can't wait.

Well, it arrived Thursday last week and the mods have started :D

The canopy, dual batteries and compressor are all in - I'll put up photos tonight.

Question re wiring - I'll have an ARB fridge in the tub so will be using 6mm wiring for those duties, and I'll have some other accessories like canopy lights, and various plugs and whatnot for charging phone and powering the camp lights etc, If I ran 30 amp wiring again (in addition to the one soley for the fridge) to the tub into a fuse block (fused at the battery end too), and then have the camp lights, canopy lights etc run from that, would that work ok? Just trying to keep everything neat.

The suspension has arrived and is booked in to go in on Monday :D (pics to follow) and the bullbar, winch, UHF, rear bar and fuel manager will go this week. I'm fitting up the Provent 200 this weekend as I have some time spare so looking forward to getting to use it all.

Have also spent a fair bit on rubber to seal up the tailgate. This will get a good test in the coming weeks and I'll work out where the rest of the dust gets in.

Also the STMaxx are on too, they look great I reckon. Small amount of scrubbing on bumper when turned in and heading up a driveway, but soon to be fixed with barwork and lift

Sounds good Dan,
I am interested in seeing what you have done to stop the dust getting in through the tailgate, more details and or photos would be good.

Nice one.
Funny you should mention sealing the tailgate with rubber.
I have a '13 and was seriously considering that mod before I did a trip up through sw qld, sa and back up through Bourke but ran out of time.
So I ran with the front window of the canopy open and had very little dust ingress. At one point near Cameron Corner I noticed the rear window had come open, dunno for how long, and still bugger all dust got in! Some did but you'd expect that with the bloody window open!
I'm not even sure I'll bother with the seal now.

Some photos of when I picked it up

Compressor location, ready to be hidden by the drawers that'll fit over it, along with my green/led switch. I didn't have my keys on me when taking the pics so couldn't get it light up.

Here are some pics of the rubber I've used to stop the obvious big holes for dust.
16mm D shape with a little lip on it which seems to seal up nicely.
Image

And some pinchweld rubber
Image

I also chucked some 4mm rubber over the tailgate for roadside stops, at least it'll stop it scratching and I won't spill my coffee on one of those ripples when camping :roll:
Image

Neat little battery install, I'll chuck the fuel manager up near the second battery this weekend. They installed the redarc arc charger very neatly next to the main battery.

Sorry about all the pics. Watch out come Friday - there'll be a tonne more!

Yeah I wasn't going to get the canopy vent because on the 09 model it had a sliding window at the front I'd leave open and it would pressurise and keep the dust out of the bits I missed. I picked it up the other day and realised it was a lift up (but no real way to leave it ajar without some tinkering) so for the moment I'm getting the canopy vent put in.

Will let you know how it goes :)

Well the suspension is in!!! It looks awesome. I measured it before and after it went in with a true 50mm lift.

My only concern is that possibly the CV angles might be too much? and I have a slight vibration when taking off now. What do you guys think?

Cv angle looks okay to me, it will probably settle very slightly over time.

The slight vibration might be coming from the rear due to the lift - your rear diff pinion angle would be the culprit

Awesome build mate.

With the fridge wiring, I was gonna do the same thing, run 6mm to a double power socket, then run another for lights, but now I'm thinking I might just run a 6 or 8 gauge cable to a fuse box in the tub and power everything off that.
That way if you want to add another fridge/freezer, inverter, more lights or power sockets, there's no need for more wires to run to the front.
