I was thinking about my Hilux 4WD System today and the things you should do or check every so often to make sure they keep working.

For example:
1. The Hilux user manual states it should be driven at least 16 km per month in 4WD (obviously on s dirt road). I have heard if you don't drive them in 4WD regularly, it is no good for them.

2. If you have a winch, apparently you should use it every now and then to make sure it doesn't cease up. How often should you do this and what should you do?

What other stuff, apart from servicings etc should we be doing to make sure that when we need something, it will work...

Park the Lux near the front door of your local pub. Run out the winch cable through the entrance, over the bar, down into the cellar and hook up at least two barrels. Winch back towards your Lux. Unhook and then take them home and drink immediately. Repeat this weekly and your winch (and liver) will never seize...

your winch should be run out and back in once a month. this stops the contacts getting corrosion and the solarnoid having problems. the winch should be wound on with about 250 kg weight on the wire. so the next time you pull out say 10meters it wont pull down into the looser turns under it on the drum.

Check monthly for cracks on the front passenger wheel arch just in case your dual battery has almost fell through.

Winch cable should also be oiled once every 2-3 months, keeps it in good condition... use oil and a rag whilst winching in a beer keg from your local pub.

Check your fuel cooler once a month for damage in case a stick has caused some minor damage (or alternatively make a cover for it) this is located on the passenger side between the gearbox and chassis rail.

Check for loose bolts on suspension, bull bar, rear step and other various bits and pieces as you should always re-tighten them all a few weeks or so after you have aftermarket gear fitted.
