Postby hdlux on Sun, 26 Jun 2011 3:06 +0000

Hi i have a 11/2005 hilux d4d 5 speed and changed the diff and gearbox oils and used what toyota recomended, now when its cold its hard to get gears, second mainly.
When i dropped the oil out i did notice gearbox oil was red.
then i was told to use penrite sin50,still didnt help, was a little better i think.
Any help would be great

Are you sure it's not a faulty bush in the gear stick, which makes it hard to select gears...this was a history problem with the earlier "new shapes". It was dealt with somewhere in this forum not so long ago.

Mate most gear box oils are red! But if you didnt have any problems with the gear selection before you changed the oil did you?

Like Dan said are you sure you got enough in there?
To check properly, needs to be on flat ground and when you crack the level hole the fluid should be just twinkling out, fuild should be level with bottom of hole!

The Toyota and Nissan gearboxes use a 'special' gearbox oil, not the normal one recommended by some places. Please make sure it's the correct type with the right visconsity  . If not you will loose the bearings on the 2nd & 3rd gears. Been there . . . done it and paid the hard way!
Unfortunately do not remember the correct type now

With something like that you would be better off going to Toyota and buying a drum off them!
That was if they stuff up and give you wrong oil than you have a chance to hit them up for the damage....
