this issue with the injector seals and dirty oil pick up put a massive hole in my pockt only weeks after buying my lux. its a common problem so keep a eye out for signs of failure. this may be rattle noise while driving black or white smoke especially in cold mornings. cost me just under 10000 to fix including the towing and clutch while i was down there.

The dreaded down hill smoke has just started, so I will be replacing the injectors and seats.
Could I wait a week or so??? Last oil change there was no grit in oil and the pick up was clean. Any thoughts??

Thanks

I had this problem last year...rough running, white smoke, blocked oil pick up...I didn't bother getting injectors checked on computer...I just changed all 4 injectors and seals myself cost me around $3000.

My mate has just had this problem (oh both hilux's are 05 models)...he took his to toyota to have them checked on computer and they said all 4 injectors are in spec...my mate then spoke with a diesel mechanic that has been doing nothing but hilux's lately...he said the injector seals have been the problem...so my mate just changed the seals and kept original injectors in...and it's running fine now...

Diesel mechanic said the injector seals have been the issue stuffing injectors up...and the seals should be changed every 30k to 40k km's...

If we go back to the amount of people with this problem and toyota have told them it's not warranty...you must have put dirty fuel in...customer then had to pay...if it is dodgy injector seals damaging injectors is it then faulty parts from the manufacturer?

How did you go about cleaning your blocked oil pick up?

I was going to pull sump off...but put that in the too hard basket...i think the only way is to lift motor...
all I did was put an engine flush in before the oil change (liqui-moly brand from supercheap)...and I did that a few times over a few weeks...and just checked oil pick up screen everytime i changed oil.
My screen wasn't too bad originally...so the engine flush i'm hoping was enough...I did all that 10 months ago and haven't had any problems.

Good old blow by, and I know it well.
I was posting some answers to a Boxhead question over on the Rattle thread and put up some photos of the end result with this condition.

The reason why this happens : Basically, the seats (sheets) fail and the exhaust gases mix with the engine oil. This in turn causes a chemical reaction which turns the engine oil into solid material, which blocks the sump screen and starves the block of lubrication. NO LUBRICATION = NO BLOCK, PISTONS AND CRANKSHAFT.
This is an expensive repair and should be avoided by educating yourselves.
As what has been pointed out on this important thread, the screen should be checked at every oil change service. I recommend the 5,000km interval service, mainly because the EGR system hasn't changed that much in design from the late model 1KZ-TEs, and they were 5,000km intervals.

Image

These are the seats that cause the problem when they distort, especially the old copper seats that had not been coated. Late 2007, TMC redesigned the seats, and that lead to the seat on the right. The cooper seats have been deleted from the parts catalogue worldwide. 30011 is the new number, the old one was 30010.
In Australia we had the situation where a lot of dealerships did the valve clearance by audible means. My personal opinion on this was to keep the price down in line with fixed price servicing which most of us outside of Toyota Service cannot compete with.
In GSIC, it specifically states that the injector sheets (seats) should be replaced with the valve clearance services under warranty at the 40,000km and 80,000km services.
Unfortunately, this was not done to many vehicles which lead to this problem being common place. Well, at least in my world, and other diesel fitters who are members of the AADS.

Some people get mixed up with the seal, which is an O ring type half way up the injector shaft. You can see on this photo that the blow by has taken out that seal. All the seal does is stop the engine oil leaking out of the injector port, as there is an outlet within the cylinder head that allows engine oil into the port to help cool the bottom half of the injector. The seats are there to block off and seal the hole where the injector nozzle goes through on the cylinder head and thus the block bores.
The Roo.

The fix and maintenance to avoid this problem from happening.
If you have got one of the early models, right up to early 2008, then you will probably have the old copper seats in your cylinder head. These copper seats should be replaced with the Bailey's seats. The Bailey's seats are by far the best seats out there for these vehicles, including the Prados.
Just get onto Matt about it. If you can't get them off Matt from Baileys, then the genuine ones will do.
Part number 11176-30011.
Yes, you will have to take out the injectors to do this job.
As discussed on this thread already, an inspection camera or a torch to inspect the screen every time you drop the engine oil as part of your maintenance schedule is the go, and is cheap insurance.
Hope this helps and catch you later, John.

Roo, I have to ask…why do you keep referring to the injector seats as "sheets"?

Hi Talktheroo,
Interesting, I had my injectors replaced under warranty in Jan 2010 @ 85,500 kilometers.(04/07 model now 165000 kilometers).
Just checked the invoice after you posted the part numbers. Am I right in thinking they have used the OLD seals? The invoice reads; TO2368130010 SEAL, NOZZLE HOLDER. There is no mention of seats on the invoice parts list.
Cheers and thanks for your input to this and the prado forums.

Cause that's what Toyota refers to in their repair manual. Injection nozzle sheets.

Oh yeah, all Japanese service literature is full of those typos.
"Make sure filler cap is rocked" "brake pedal must be treaded to floor" etc.

Ozblue, ye, it's not possible for them to use the old seats, 11176-30010, as they have been deleted.
It will be a typo, and they used the old number.
Just for reference, the new number is 11176-30011.
The sheet thing, I put that there for all the Toyota service technicians, like BH.
In the diesel fitting industry, they are called seats.
It's just to save any confusion.
Catch you later, John.
