What (Chip it) tune are you running on your hilux

Postby rosshire on Fri, 07 Oct 2011 9:30 +0000

I got my 3 inch exhaust in early this week and yesterday I received my Chip it chip in the post.
I am keen to get some feedback from other guys on what tune they are running and how they find the difference with regards to power and economy.

With regards to power, I can feel a massive increase in power. I think with the exhaust and chip its quicker with the 32" tyres than it was with stock tyres and no mods.

On stock tyres I was getting around 11 Km per litre, that dropped down to 8.4km per litre after fitting the 32" tyres. (real figure would be around 9km since the tyres throw the speedo out by around 7-8 %)

After fitting the chip the computer is now reporting to me 9.7 km per litre (around 10.5 if you allow for the speedo difference). I don't know wether the trip computer is lying to me, since I have not been trough a full tank of diesel yet, but will find out once I fill up again. If its true, then that's around a 15% improvement on economy and a massive power boost. Still can't see how that makes sense but hey, Im not complaining.

I also have a heavy right foot and have found that I may need to alter my driving style a little, especially around corners. Driving in the same manner as I did before the tail is starting to kick out around corners, so I have found myself having to back off rather than punch it (which is what I normally do :)).

overall its only been less than a day with my chip but looks great so far.

In the back of my mind I am still a little worried about the long term affects of the chip and how it will affect the wear of the vehicle, does anyone have any comments or experiences regarding this issue?

Oh, and I almost forgot, I am running on tune 9 off the preset chipit tunes.

I'm running folder 3 tune 4. Also in the market for a hd clutch it slips when I gun it. My fuel economy hasn't altered much but it really depends on how you drive it. At least now I can overtake! :D

What size tyres are you running?

With regards to the black smoke, I had a mate driving behind me and he tells me
That when I put my foot down, a small puff of black
Smoke comes out the exhaust. Is that what you experience or is it different?

I have a little bit of black smoke just when i take off. I am running the std tune that came with the chip it.... (08 SR5 Auto) On a wet day I have to be careful because it will easily spin back tyres 265 75 16 BFG KM2. My economy is heaps better than before nearly 1 litre per 100 ks empty. When towing 2.7 Ton boat I use to get around 17 ltrs now I can easily get 15 ltrs per 100 ks and will hold top gear in auto and will easily accelerate to 120-130 when overtaking. I have a led foot.. Love the drivability of the car now easily out pulls my old turbo diesel 80 series.

Custom tune 2. 3 inch zorst, 4inch lift, sahara bar, winch, bash plates, rock sliders, 33s, manual, STD gears. I drive it like I stole it most of the time and average bout 650kms per tank. Economy stays pretty much the same whether I'm hooning, wheeling or highway cruising.
Turned the chip off for a week and got about 50km less from the tank.
Always use Vortex

I installed mine last night (thanks rob for the awesome deal and the after sales support!!! ) My car is still pretty stock intake and exhaust wise so I've opted for the standard Folder 2, tune 4 map. Definitely feels a bit zippy now and economy doesn't appear to be suffering.
I put a Scan Gauge II in as well 8-) ...just to keep an eye on things.

I'll look into getting the pyrometer add on very soon...

I fitted my Chipit and EGT sensor over the weekend to 2010 SR5 Hilux DC Auto. Oh my god what a difference. It came with Tune 5 installed and the car has come alive even with a standard ex.

I have recently fitted an Avenger Workstytle Canopy, ARB bars all around, a winch, 32" tyres, the usual 2.5" lift, 140l fuel tank, 50l water tank and I normally carry at least 2 engines in the back of my truck for work. So it is now very heavy. It had become depressing to drive. It would constantly kick down gears on the tollways around home just trying to stay at 80 km/hr. It would rarely even stay in converter lockup. Fuel economy dropped from 9 to 10l/100km when new and lightly loaded, to about 12l/100km.

Enter the Chipit chip. The car will now pull up hill, cruise control on, in top gear with the converter locked up. Fuel economy looks like being back to 9 to 10l/100km range. My hilux is now fun to drive again. The part throttle torque is just awesome. This is obviously where the increase in economy comes from.

As a test i changed the tune back to tune 3 today, just to see what the difference would be. As expected the car lost torque everywhere. Unfortunately I have tried tune 5 so could never live with tune 3 happily. If the egt's get too high i will have to put an exhaust on.

I reckon i will have to try the remainder of the tunes but might wait until I own a scantool in case i need to clear any codes.

I have had the Chipit fitted for 4 days and so far highly recommend it to anyone.

I would be keen to hear from others just how high they have gone tune wise before they needed the fuel rail mod. I would love to turn the wick up a little higher.

Regards
Chris

Hi Guys

Just installed chip it module yesterday also, purchased from another guy on this forum recently (Thanks Shane), running the standard tune that comes with the chip. Power is great :P especialy in a little 2WD manual dual cab running standard Sr5 wheels ... wheelspin city!!........only downside so far is the medium puff of smoke on hard initial acceleration.
Standard exhaust and intake too, no mods at all. Tossing up whether to fit the EGR blanking plate supplied but a bit worried about the error codes some seem to experience with this fitted.
Also have the EGT monitor but havent installed it yet either so wont turn the tune up further until this is installed. Fuel economy seems much the same or slightly better but have only done 200 K's since chip fitted. Seems to have slightly more injector/ engine noise than standard...... more noticeable I guess as mine is an SR with bugger all sound deadening.
Overall quite impressed withthe only question mark being what this chip will do to the engine long term.....but too much fun to worry too much at the present.
Cheers
