ESC issues

ESC issues

Postby hylux on Thu, 02 Apr 2015 8:31 +0000

ESC Situation is
2010 SR5 had 2 inch lift fitted years ago no issues
Changed wheels to FJ on standard tyres it came 265/70/17 with no issues for 6 months while they were on
Changed tyres to BFG KM2 M/T started to get ESC cutting on occationally

Now done 15,000km on these tyres and ESC is getting worse

Symptoms in the dry
Activating on bends it never did before at speeds 40-70km only
Also, and this is the strange bit, appears when the ESC suspects something is going to happen it primes the brakes ready. When you put your foot on the brakes the pedal is harder than normal and you almost go thru the windscreen ( has done this from new ). Lately I have been suspecting this priming is actually putting the brakes on slightly. I was going up a winding mountain range the other day and felt like I was loosing power. No lights on dash no noises This I think only started happening after the last service whereby they did the full brake service.

I am going to do some more testing on a hilling bendy road where I can get it to happen each time and then try with ESC off. I dont see it being the traction control in any way as the speeds, right boot and dry would not cause this to activate

Any ideas ??

I have had the same problem mate. don't know what happens. Had the hard brake pedal problem. It occured on a gentle curve and it occurred just as I changed down to turn a corner and i nearly went through the windscreen. Happened again as I slowed going round a round-a-bout (no foot on pedal), threw the vehicle onto it's left front wheel and was bloody scary. I thought it may have been a fault in something, but it appears if it's happening to you too, it's just a pretty violent esc system. If you follow this up, please post it up as there may be others who would like to know, apart from you and me. I'd do it myself but i'm not real popular at my dealer at present. I need to go quiet for a while.
cheers

My vehicle is stock and had also just come from it's first 6 month service when it started.

I do believe boxhead55 has mentioned on here somewhere that a lot of issues arise with the vsc from an increase in the tyre size, As they are programmed to the 265/65 r17s. Also depending on the sensitivity of the vsc program as there has been a couple of updates from when it was first introduced back in August 2010

This is a known issue with Toyota. It happens with larger tyres, lift kits and sagged/overloaded original suspension. Take it back to the dealer and get the computer reflash.

This information was posted in a previous thread-

Ref No ;TNF 15/13 (supersedes TNF 81/12 issued 2/07/12)
Model ; Hilux GGN25 & KUN26
Subject ; Premature Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) Operation (Update)

Well it went to Toyota today and they found my model wont take the new software as its for the models after mine 2011 onwards. They checked the computer and no faults have registered. We went for a drive and was able to show them what it does. At this stage they believe its the tyres causing it and speed ( I dont think I was going that fast ) but are going to investigate further with the software update as to why it is not accepted on mine. They are also going to find a similar model ute and try it on the same corners to replicate.
At least I havent got the fob off yet so will be interesting what they come up with. I am also going to put my old wheels and tyres back on and see what happens.

I have a 2010 august build with vsc if you want something to compare it to.

Spoke with the dealer again today, they sent off the data out off the car to Toyota to look at. They came back and said the software is correct but the car is loosing traction on one of the rear wheels, the mechanic couldnt recall if it was the left or the right. So they want the car back to do brake proporsion test to see if it is in spec front to rear and will put a load in it as well and recheck. If its not they will adjust back in spec, if it is in spec not their problem so I guess will be blaming lift and tyres.

Hi fellas,I know this post was some time ago but hoping someone can help me. I've just fitted 2 inch Dobison kit and bigger tyres from 265 65 17 to 265 70 17 on a 2011 SR5 Hilux and having the same issue as above. ESC kicking in when cornering moderately above 60 kmh. Took it to Toyota and ran the scan tool with no issues identified. I had read that an ECU update was available but as above my ECU needed to be the next model to take the update. They quoted me $5,500 but couldn't be sure it would fix the issue. Any help would be appreciated. Cheers.

Sorry for late response. As the tyres wear it reduces and eventually ok. Think it took about 10-15k on the km2's. So looks like it didn't like the new tires.
I do remember it did it a little bit when I first bought the car new with bf at's. Had some of the std fj cruiser ht tyres on for awhile and it didn't do it
