Prevention: Better than Cure

You know that old saying - "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure"

Post up your top preventative maintenance or preventive mod tip from anything engine, drive-line, paintwork, electrical etc related, big or small, expensive to costing next to nothing, 1KD or 1GR.

Primarily aimed at new rigs but some older models can still be purchased stock standard so post your tips for anything post '05

Based on likes, I will attempt to list tips/mods in order of popularity (but it is not a competition ;) ) on this first post for ease of future reference


To start:
Oil Catch Can
Cost: ~$170 for can only $340 full install kit
Prevents: EGR fouling / save hours of cleaning / error codes

Fumoto drain valve (1KD/2KD/1GR)
Cost: About $34 + $9flat rate postage + length of hose each service (for F103N)
Prevents: Oil in eye, oil dripping from crossmember after service, diving after drain plug in bucket of hot oil

Changing air and fuel filters

Clean of MAF Sensor and MAP Filter
Cost: 10 minutes for both + a few squirts from can of MAF cleaner and carby cleaner

Extend Diff and Gearbox breathers

Dry lube the ignition key hole now and then
Cost: Can of contact cleaner + dry lube
Prevents: Stiff tumbler

Pre/Post Fuel filter
Cost:$300 for the complete Stanadyne Fuel Manager kit
100 fuel filter (2 micron) . set it up as final filter (after the Toyota one)
Prevents: it helps keep your fuel clean and free of water, thus prolonging the life of your fuel delivery system

Use cheap armor oil stuff on my cv boots to keep them healthy and soft
Cost: A bottle of armorall or other such protectant such as Aerospace 303 - said to be heat resistant
Prevents: dry/cracking rubber

Remove front mud flap/undo bolts holding botton guard. Flex out guard and flush out all the crap that builds up.
Cost:10 minutes
Prevents: Rust

Coat my whole underbody /chassis rails in inox or lanolin
Cost: ~ 1hour + 1-2L Inox/Lanox every 4 to 6 months depending on how much beach my car sees
Prevents: Rust, + repels water and dirt

i do the diffs front and back and air filter also @ 40 000

and fuel filter every 20 000


i also use cheap armor oil stuff on my cv boots to keep them healthy and soft opposed to dry and cracking!

Thanks for the other posts guys. If future posts on this thread could include approx costs, benefit of mod/tip, and links that would make things much easier for reference.

Glad to help DB, least I could do to match the effort you will be putting into this :D .
It'll be a good resource for those wanting a quick glance at the benefits and cost of cures that's been mentioned all over NH.

if its also worth anything, i coat my whole underbody /chassis rails in inox or lanolin, once every 4 to 6 months depending on how much beach my car sees. also makes it repel water and dirt much easier :)

Change injector seats(1KD-FTV)
Cost: <$50 parts for 4X seats, orings, 5X leak off washers, some gasket sealant. + 2-3 hours labour
Prevents: Blow-by/engine failure

I put 400ml of mineral Two Stroke Oil in every tank full of diesel.

Greasing your drive shaft crosses regularly. I grease mine about 2 to three times a year. But I guess depending on how much driving you do and how much off roading you do will determine how often you grease them.

Check your wheel nuts regularly, especially if driving or gravel or corrugated roads often. They have a habit of working themselves loose.
