The other solution fitting a catch can, can also generate problems in my climate since the moist can create ice blockage. Since I use block heater or a Webasto diesel heater in the winter time the heat up is pretty fast even though it would take slightly longer without egr.

Thanks for the good info.

Soll, if you use the Mann Hummel brand of catch can, it's a filter based system, so you shouldn't have any problems.
They are designed and made in Germany, so fine for your climate.

has anyone done any comparisons with and without egr blocked off
1: better/ worse fuel economy
2: better/ worse performance
im interested in fuel economy results

Either the Mann Hummel Provent 200 or a Drift/Repco style catch can.
You use R7 15.9mm hose to do this.
Note, this is also the legal way of taking those nasty oil residues out of the gas.
For the hoses, I use the Gates brand of hoses.
By using this method of installation, you will not get any fault codes either.
BH is right, in what he is saying, too, by the way.
BH, that's a nice clean turbo there. I don't ever get to see them like that, unless it's a new assembly, minus the cut out, of cause. LOL.
Catch you later, John.

Surely it is 2 completely different options. Blocking off egr and fitting a catch can

I don't think that you should block off the EGR valve. It's part of the electronic system.
The main issue here is to remove that oil residue from the recycling gas, and it's my opinion, that the catch can is the best way to do this job. It's also the legal way to do it.

That picture there seems to be extreme, DB. That's a lot of oil residue with no water vapour.
I am not saying that it isn't true or anything like that, but your situation sounds right, mate.
If your worried about it, just check to see how dry the hose is, or elbow is, going to the turbo.
It should be pretty dry, not oily.

Our climate here is tropical.. So water vapour is impossible in my area.. Even though i have this catch can.. Oil still present in the hose after the catch can & elbow intake before the turbo..

Tropics are the worst for water vapor.
Condensation is bad in the top of Motors and fuel tanks.

The diesel fuel get to temps from 85 to 100 deg c. When it cools condensation droplets form in the top of the fuel tank. And top of the motor.

Just a FYI.

Have a great day.

Maybe a Mann Hummel Provent 200 catch can, might be the answer. It's not gravity feed, but has a filter system.

I am looking at putting in a blanking plate with an 8mm hole in it. Has anyone done this and compared fuel consumption before and after? This was the main reason I was told to try it. My mechanic mate said guys he work with have done it and really improved fuel usage. What have people here found?

hi razoo
i have done this i put my blanking plate down where egr pipe goes into the engine block
i havnt done any test yeh to compare fuel consumption i am very keen to find out though.
i have 07 d4d dualcab, alloy tray, 245/75r16 bfg muddies,2 inch lift,steel bullbar/sidesteps,
12,000lb winch with synthetic rope. i get anywhere from 560km - 600km out of a tank from
when light first comes on.
i have never had any limp mode problems ( i also have chipit).
i was going to do this today and drive for a week or 2 but i think i might of misplaced the
gasket where the blanking plate is.

Has anyone here thought of taking the whole system out to remove to soot and the heat from the intake when I get Back to Perth going to give it a go. I know the boys in Thailand do it but can be hard to find info on he web.

So just wana find out if anyone has given it a go

Just put a full blanking plate in which eliminates the egr system. Why don't we do it? Because the sensor picks up there is no flow and throws a fault I believe it's the only thing stopping us

So putting a full blanking plat will stop the flow and give the same fault??

Boxhead - I've rerouted my EGR so it doesn't breathe exhaust gases but instead breathes air from the intake. Ideally I want to install a catch can and revert it back to stock, but in the interim I can't imagine there being much of a negative effect from my method except slightly worse exhaust pollutants. Do you know of any negative effects that I might have overlooked?

Also based on my understanding of the EGR I cannot fathom how blocking it will help with either economy or power, considering it is never open when you're accelerating.

The egr is used to keep combustion temps down.keep exhaust emissions down and help heat the engine quickly. Block it or add fresh combustible air the cylinder temps will rise. And change the hole process. Possibly engine damage may result. Don't mean to scare u but it is the facts.

Also the maf sensor map sensor throttle plate and the turbo vains all work hand in had with the egr valve. Change one facet and they all change.

A huge head ake!
