Tips for sand /beach driving

One set of MAXTRAX (as stated already) is essential. Also when on a deep boggy beach you may not be able to stop in order to retreive the MT's and this is where having a friend (a fit one) comes in handy. On this point I have been given a tip about the MT's in that you tie a rope to them and then secure that to your tow bar which will automatically retreive them as you go forwards. I will try this next time I'm away.

ANother MAXTRAX tip for deep sand is to start in 2nd low range as 1st will get you started but you'll stop dead when you gear change.

I run 225/75 R16 Toyo AT's. What are people running in this size tyre (or similar)? Just want to compare to what I run (18psi).

Keep the speed down and look for holes. I was travelling along a nice firm and flat beach at Kangaroo Island, doing about 70Ks and all of a sudden there was a great hole in front of me. It was about 4 foot wide 5 foot long and about 2 foot deep, some fool had dug it and scattered the sand so there was no indication it was there. I managed to straddle it so no harm done except for a dose of adrenalin. I stopped and filled it in, my wheels had actually caved the sides in, if I had not managed to straddle it, it would have ripped my front end out.

Well it's pretty much been said in every second post BUT again it ain't a race slow and steady is the pace!

-momentum not speed
-if in doubt use low range second gear starts
-Low tyre pressure (take your own tyre pump for back to road driving & tyre gauge)
-check tide times
-Look out for beach goers AND KIDS they run and don't look!
-Keep of the Grass so the dunes will last
-stick to other car tracks
-keep to the left
- look out and slow down for creeks
- it takes 5 - 10 seconds for your steering to respond in sand rutts especially when crossing over

Sorry but one piss me of is ''give more room to the ocean side drivers'' cause not everyone likes driving in salty wave wash!!

in QLD road rules apply to all beaches if we stuff that up they will take it away from us

Have fun help others in trouble if ya can

Gee think i might head up the beach this weekend 8-)

another good one is that if for some reason you end up driving across a slope turn the front wheels with the slope not up against, especially if you have momentum, this will prevent your truck from rolling. seen a few near misses around the beaches and dunes over here where people are goin hell for leather and the next thing are up on 2 wheels cause there instant reaction to a slope they didnt see was to steer into it....

The high or low is for high range or low range 4wd, the number is just the gear ie low 2 is low range 2nd gear etc.
i know it's not a hilux but really.....WHO CARES!! We're all here for the same reason :D

Look at joining a 4wd club &/or doing an accredited 4wd driver training course. Worth their weight in mud & sand :)

Thanks for all these gold tips guys, exactly what I was looking for as I am about to pop my sand cherry as well, I found a training company out of newcastle called "Out of town 4WD", They run days out on stocko, I plan to look more into this as I spend 90% of my time in Kurri for work. If any body knows any other quality training companys I might try I d be happy to listen to ya! Cheers, This forum is proving really helpfull

tyres on 15psi ive founs best, old mans always tought me when your going long the sand push your clutch in and if you gently continue rolling to a stop then your tyre pressure is about right, if you slow very quickly then might need to drop them a little further.
Ive only tried h4 on the beach and once and all i could smell was clutch so i always use l4, not going to hurt the car using low just a few more gear changes, and ive never been bogged on the beach, quiet a regular use of stockton
bout to head up there to do some test before i do frazer probly weighing about 2.7t when i head up

Cheers Ross

When driving down a steep sand dune do not brake, sometimes you need to accelerate to keep the wall of sand in front of the car

4 - 8 psi if you go slow and keep in a straight line... :D

Lowest I've ever needed to go in sand was 12

Take off slowly so your wheels don't spin in the sand causing holes
