Just on this brakes issue, how do you remove the rear drums? I tried this arvo to clean out all the brake dust and inspect the thickness. Chocked the ute, in neutral, jacked it up and removed wheels. Tried hitting the face of the drum with a hammer, no movement on the left hand side, looks like a little bit of rust forming at the base of the wheel studs, right hand side had a little bit of movement. What am I doing wrong? Thanks

First hit the wheel studs with some WD40 or something and try gently tapping the outside of the drum. If that does not work, you might have worn drums that have a lip on them that is stopping them coming off. In this case, you will have to back off the adjusters so the drums can clear the brake shoes.

Oh thats not a good sign considering I'm heading on a big trip on Wednesday. Drowned the studs in WD40 and let it soak in, still no movement on the rear left. Will try releasing the adjusters in the morning. Is that through the top grommet? Is there much involved in replacing the drums and brake shoes?

Fit 2 x 8mm bolts in the threaded holes in the face of the drum and the drum comes off when you tighten.

The holes are between the studs and the 2 you use are opposite each other. Tighten a bit at a time on each one and it should start to come away.

When refitting make sure your fingers are out of the way, I know this cause I tried to cut one finger tip off Bloody hell it bled and hurt.

Well something has gone pear shaped over night. Yesterday afternoon I put the lux up on stands, removed the rear wheels, soaked the wheel studs and the inner ring closest to the outershaft of the axle housing (the one exposed through the rim) with WD40. Tried removing the drums with belting the face with a hammer. No luck which is when I packed up and put the wheels back on and posted above. Parked the ute on the driveway yesterday evening, engage the handbrake and the lux rolls through it. Parked it in first gear, no dramas. Working on the ute all afternoon in the canopy on level ground, go to park the ute on the driveway this evening, first gear again. Ute sits there for a second, then theres a series of clunks then the vehicle jerks about 3-4 inches down the drive, first gear bites again, clunks then the vehicle jerks again and so on. During this, the lux is in first gear, handbrake is on even thou its not biting at the moment, and no pedals are being touched. Would anybody know what the problem is?

How steeps your driveway? Sounds like engine not holding vehicle and the clunks are from the engine and gearbox jolting in reverse. I would sort your handbrake issue, and if your driveway is quite steep put vehicle in low range 1st as this will increase holding.

After reading this post I decided to adjust mine and now the hand brake works a treat only about 4 clicks compared to about 10 before. Since I changed the pizza cutter wheels and put on 245/75/R16LT toyo open countrys on 16x7 dynamic sunnies I have got brake squeel from my drums. I have dusted the inside out a few times but it comes back after 20km of driving. When I had the car serviced by toyota they dusted the inside out just like I had and it still came back. It finally went away 2 months later then I had my tires rotated and its back. I though maybe tightening the drums would fix it but it hasn't. It seems the pads are to soft and makes to much dust. I bought the car brand new and it started to happen at the 4000km mark when I put the tires on. Would anyone recommend changing the drum pads?

Just had the lux fitted with DBA grooved discs and bendix 4x4 pads this morning cost $600 fitted some of the best money spent on the car yet should of done it a couple of years ago

Dont metion brakes to me... Some Phuqer has eat'on mine... may have been the mud from the mudakhana...

But Im still looking for a fat man with a guilty look to fit the bill...

Just thought id post in here to bump it back up as everyone should be doing this. Bought the tool from super cheap and after 15 clicks on each side the hand brake works again, the pedal is firm and the truck stops !!!
Appart from the hand brake i didnt realise how bad mind had got as it happens gradualy but now they are where they are supposed to be the difference is huge. 25000kms il definately be doing it again much sooner than that

I just adjusted my rear brakes last Saturday too.

Handbrake was 7 clicks and after adjusting it's now 4 clicks.

I got a mechanic to do it for me though.

My odometer is at close to 89k kms and the rear bonded shoe lining is still quite thick.

Like you said, it happens so gradually that we don't notice that the brakes are not that effective.

getting bendix ultimate pads fitted today and gettin my rear brake lines extended at the same time, the mechanics said they adjusted the rear brakes at the service the other day and no change at all, im guessing that they didnt do it right as the hand brake didnt feel any different.

Also goin to get better brake fluid installed once the new lines go back on tomorrow, hopefully it makes this problem go away, other wise it will be the slotted rotors next.

All toyota said is that there is probably a valve blocked in the system and said it would be extra to fix it even tho iv only done under 30k. Ass's

have a look at pg 3 of my build up it shows how to make the rear brakes work more affective it made a hell of a differance to my lux. i have the bendix hd and DBA 4000 slotted rotors that ill be putting on when i service the lux next then i shouldent have any more problems

guys, i just reverse full tit and jam the brakes on. works every time. i do it about every 1000kms. no need to grovel under the truk.

Sounds like a good tip, just wondering, is "full tit" somewhere between 75% and 85% throttle?

I've been driving around with basically the basically the front brakes stopping the whole car.
The other day i almost couldn't stop in time at a round about.
Decided to get off my ass and do something about it.
Front pads were real low, so just got Bendix Premium pads since budget is tight (went to get a quote from the local repco on the Bendix Ultimate which cost roughly $300). Then machined the front disc.
Pulled off the drums, and to my surprise its like the rear shoes were brand new. dedusted them. Adjusted the handbrake till about 4 clicks.
Then adjusted the LSPV. While i was still on the brakes, i changed the brake fluid to DOT 4.
I now stop much better then what it did.

For the price of Bendix Ultimate brake pads, i think it would be worth just going for the Prado brake conversion. I know the Prado's stop real well with standard pads and heavy load.

The father in law did the brakes on our Prado 120 a few weeks ago........they are bullshit to say the least!
