Thanks Nico. Mine just got the polish and grease again today. I asked specifically about the replacement, and they said see how you go and we will look into it.

Just had my first 1000 service. The dealership said they are finding a way to fix it.

New Tail Shaft fitted today. Running very smoothly now. Waiting for paperwork to see the part number.

Update : found a barcode on the shaft itself D160518T085434 - assume that could be the part number?

Update on our lemon - toyota not interested brushing us off. We have had the tail shaft changed at 1,000km with no difference problem remained. Since then more issues with the way car drives. Apparently it's our professional 2" lift kit causing these issues now. What's next, our bull bar is making transmission rev its guts out and get stuck in gear? We have gone to Consumer Affairs - next step VCAT.

Let me know how it goes when installed, my dealer says there are not any newly designed tailshafts yet. From what I have heard on this site I beg to differ!

What I mean is: when doing 80-90km going down a hill, foot is off the excelerater, car is coasting down the hill - if I so much as touch the brake very lightly the auto drops gears and the revs go up to 4,000 revving its guts out, the car slows down but it's stuck in gear screaming until the road has levelled out at which stage the car corrects itself - in the wet this is very dangerous

I think its meant to do that. Mine will change down when breaking downhill, especially if its on cruise control. I don't know if its stuck so much as waiting to finish engine breaking.

So far running very well. All the clunky start/stop is gone. Finally feels like having a new car.

I got my tailshaft polished and greased yesterday, so far so good, but a few more km's will tell, the auto seems lees fluffy as well which is weird. The mechanic said see how you go and the look on his face sort of said to me "you will be back". The vehicle feels so much better to drive now, I must have been getting used to the clunk

this is pretty standard on most vehicles these days, our Prado does this as well, I would have thought that this gives more control rather than free wheeling downhill, especially when towing down steep hills

Had mine greased this week, clunk pretty well gone. Also i noticed on the highway (with cruise) it seemed to keep in 6th much better: previously it would kick down to 5th at the slightest rise in the road or even a strong gust of wind! But have only been on highway once, maybe i imagined it ;)
Anyway time will tell, see how it goes in another 1000km... :)

Yup, I found the fix only lasted 800km or less.

I can't believe after all the trouble with the 150 Prado models, that this has happened again. It's the same human engineering error. All to tight which causes binding.
