4.1 Diff gears going bang

Postby dano85 on Wed, 01 Feb 2017 10:08 +0000

Hey Guys.
I have a D4d manual hilux on 33's and have put up with the bad gearing for years, now i tow a light weight Cub Explorer camper (under a ton fully loded) and its terrible in hilly contry or off road so i have finaly decided to regear it to 4.1s.
I have done loads of reserch on it and found so many people are breaking diffs with raitios similar to those, so many brakeages on prados (seen on pradopoint) and many re geared hiluxes on facebook pages and hear. prety confident its caused by less teeth contact on the lower raitios.
Everone recomends solid spacer installs which makes sence tho many of those set ups fail and it seams genuine and aftermaket gears also fail.
Now im left to install error, has anyone had 4.1s or lower installed for a long time? becuse you verry rarely hear of the 3.5s failing.
Do you thik 4.1s can be installed and ensure a strong diff?
Any one have an awsome diff builder in sydney?

Ive had 4.11s in my auto running 33s for a few years now and hammered the crap out of them on a few occasions ( got a shift kitted auto that tries to break your neck on shifts in low range if you dont back off before it changes
) i did get solid spacers installed when they were put it.

That gives me a bit of faith, I've seen your build and it looks like you use it well!

How does the auto go with the 33s and 4.1? wish you had of gone 4.5? what revs does it sit on doing 100km/h?
Cheers, Stuart

There was a suspect batch of Chinese gears supplied through a dealer selling them as japenese gears.

Mine with the auto and nitto 285/75/16s sits exactly spot on the speedo with 4.11s. So it says im doing 100 and im doing 100. So revs the same as stock at 100 just over 2grand i think. Im happy with them
