Hey everyone, had my December 2015 HiLux SR5 back to the Dealership today re: ongoing issue with fuel usage. Always maintained it was related to DPF somehow as the engine would idle up to around 900rpm and you could hear the exhaust injector ticking away. This process would continue for some 150km's on highway driving without stopping. Like it was constantly trying to clear soot.

Finally today they tell me there is a software flash to be conducted but only after they replace my DPF. So now I'm waiting for that to arrive.

Just so others know, if you're experiencing similar driving issues with increased fuel usage, get them to closely look at the DPF and whether the exhaust injector is staying on for excessive amounts of time.

Out of curiosity, what did your fuel usage go up to? My fortuner averages 9.8-10 L/100k, yet i hear it doing the dpf burns all the time and pumping white smoke out of the exhaust. Its going in next Wednesday for as service and ive already pre-warned them about the DPF burns.

My fuel usage on the highway (which is most of my driving) is around 9L/100km if I stick to the 100km/h speed limit. Most times I'm doing closer to 120km/h which has my fuel around 10L/100km. But when the exhaust injector is stuck on and constantly doing whatever it is doing my fuel goes to nearly 14L/100km.

at that speed i cant even understand why the extra injector would open up , surely there is enough heat generated to burn off any DPF deposits

That's what Toyota tech said. That's why it took a while to work out what was causing the issue and identify that it was the exhaust injector working overtime.

Good to know, and thank god for the firmware update.
There has been a lot of politics going on between Toyota Australia and some dealerships.
I do believe that this problem is one of those issues. It had been going on since 2015, too.
I think it's a case that some people at the Port Melbourne office need to wake up.

They got told in 2015 when that injector crap happened, mainly in the 2GD-FTVs.

Where abouts did you get this sorted out at? I think I have the same sort of issue, except mine seems to use 13-14l/100 at any speed on the highway.
Been back to the dealer a few times and they have no idea, and keep telling me not to worry as I have a long warranty!
I mentioned what you have found and he turned his nose up at it and said it would have come up when he was doing his diagnostics on the car.

It's not so big in the 1GDs, this problem. There have been a few vehicles with this problem, fitted with the 1GD-FTVs. Just keep an eye out on your burn offs for the DPF. About every 200 to 300kms, they should burn off. If it's 700kms, you have the problem.

Mine burns off about the 2 to 3 hundred kms.
Mine runs around 13/14lts a 100km since new.
Have complained about the auto drop back, it still does it. Only had 1300kms on it at the time.
Nothing has changed now has about 5700 on speedo.
Late 08/16 build, got it late October 2016.
Even on trips to Adelaide 500kms away it still gives the same with fuel and auto drop back.
On scan gauge auto trans temp and torque temp runs up to 103/116 degree's on both cruise and foot driving.
Outside temp has been from 26 to 40 degree days or evenings, with and without trailer connected, in overdrive.
Trailer on locked into 5th both do run cooler but still to high for my liking.
What are your thoughts on this if ok to ask, before I go back to Toyota dealer.

Took my Fortuner for its 30,000 service. They inspected the DPF and found the injector was blocked. They have cleaned it as a temporary fix and ordered a replacement DPF system (2 weeks to get in). The dealer did say that have had a lot of cars with the new 2.8 come in with failing DPF's. He also assured me that the sheer number of replacements means Toyota is working on a permanent fix, instead of just replacing DPF's every year

Something is not right with that fuel usage. You are going to have to bite the bullet and take it to a dealership or dealerships to find out what's going on. I dare say it's the DPF system using to much fuel. What that, as I have pointed out, this can lead to injector damage like what happened with the 2GD-FTVs.
Well, towing, you might want to look at getting a oil cooler fitted. Craig Davies 678. TNN Engineering do kits for some vehicles, which makes the fitting pretty easy. That will bring your temps down by 30 degrees C.

Thanks for the reply.
I intend to fit a cooler, my ARB bar has now turned up just waiting for time to fit that, will do the cooler elec brakes, anderson plug and reverse camera then.

I thought the fuel use was to high, but was waiting for a few more kms to see if it dropped.
I will contact dealer and get it looked at.

Can someone list which one do and don't
And do can't of them have the issues

Pretty sure as of this year they all need them to meet emissions rules.

MQ triton has a dpf but I haven't heard of any failures yet.

It doesn't matter what it is, could be a $350000 Kenworth and they still have dpf issues. It's not just a Toyota thing. Be greatful Toyota have the 5th injector for the dpf and not rely on the engine injectors which end up diluting your engine oil with diesel. That's one PLUS anyway.

Had the repair carried out by Toyota. The warranty docket says replace DPF and firmware flash; and a few other things. Have not driven it much since the repair but have a road trip coming up so will interesting to see how it goes. Will let everyone know when I'm back

So I've been on a road trip through NSW and nothing has changed. I timed the last regen which was at least 44 minutes. When I say regen I'm talking about the soft regen that occurs without any warning lights and you can tell its happening due to smell of exhaust, fuel consumption increase, slight engine noise change and most noticeably the slight increase in rev's to 900rpm (auto).

So I contacted the dealer to discuss and was shot down. Tech told me they were done with my car as it's operating normally. The 5th injector apparently operates continuously and they have bascially wiped their hands of me. For now. When I return I'll be seeking an appointment with the Service Manager.

I told the tech the idle up happens about every 300-400km's which is normal but should only last about 10-20 min given my highway driving. I was told I was wrong and that it happens all the time. When I asked why Toyota would make a car that is a 4 cylinder diesel but have 5 injectors running constantly I was just told that's how it is. Needless to say I think the tech is wrong but he did quote some system that he called it so I'll get more info from them in the coming days. Not liking the fob off
