Thump / jolt from auto trans or tailshaft.

Postby leichlux on Fri, 09 Apr 2010 7:23 +0000

hey all -
since the 80k service, i've noticed a slight jolt when coming to a complete stop. also sometimes occurs when taking your foot off the brake... most often noticable on slight down hills. found this very interesting (and huge) thread on pradopoint.

just wanted to know... has anyone else experienced this issue with your hilux??

cheers guys

Yes,
Had it since 40k. Grease the tail shaft slip joint. It can't make to the 10k service intervals so you need to do it every 5k.

I'll second cam on this one, mine did it not long after a service at Toyota, gave it a grease myself and its fixed.
Want it done properly, do it yourself.
My wife say's I am not completely useless, I can serve as a bad example for others

Thanks for that info... good to know. Is there a Toyota technical bulletin (or similar) for the hilux for this issue? or am I going to have to argue with my Toyota service center?... as is the norm.
.. ask because many of the prado people are getting their prop shafts replaced under warranty.

Hello leichlux
I posted a topic on this a while ago viewtopic.php?f=31&t=5167 it’s a common problem at big service centres where they just don’t care or poorly trained staff.
You state you only had the problem after the 80k service and the only too things they do down that end of your vehicle is (or supposed too)

1: Take the drums off and inspect the pads then blow out excessive dust, if they haven’t your drum pads can grab and chatter.

2: They are suppose to change the LSD differential oil and I’m willing to bet they have used a normal gear oil with no friction modifier in it, in other words not proper LSD oil. This will cause the LSD clutches to “Chatter” when coming to a stop after a long drive of when reversing. Simply drain it out and use good quality LSD diff oil. The Toyota LSD diff oil is the same price as buying it from an auto shop so you may as well use it (LS 90)

Always try the least expensive things first, and also the things that have changed since you noticed the noise.

thats for that info gulfstream. i was thinking of changing the diff oil this weekend.

i've got a spare bottle of pennzoil LSD oil. This stuff: http://www.pennzoil.com.au/products/2008/transmission/pz_products_gearplus_80w90.asp

its 80/90, and the manual says use 90 for above -18 degrees c. (thats most of us here i imagine) :)
but it should be fine.

what LSD oil does everyone else use?

Hello leichlux

The 80/90 is fine and most Pennzoil is made by Shell and I know that particular diff oil is a good product. Shell has some of the world’s last reserves of high quality base oils. That is why most companies are moving to synthetic oils.

Also of interest is that the general public can get confused with the viscosity of oil thinking they will have more protection if they use a high viscosity grade oil, this is not the case. Toyota has decided that an oil around 90 is ideal for the temps we operate in.

If you are doing heavy and constant towing you might want to consider a 140 LSD oil. But please talk to your preferred oil company help line as you will get to talk to a chemical engineer who can help you.

The diff oil you have chosen has a very high shear yield.

thanks for the info gulfstream - you're a gold mine mate!

turned out i only had 2 lt of pennzoil (needed 3) so went and got some 90 weight Fuchs LSD oil from ARB. they reckon its good stuff.... But it hasnt fixed my jolt, and the LSD is working fine.

So i'm going to lube up the spiders in the prop shaft and see what happens.

by the way - had the 80k service recently at Toyota, and the oil that came out of the rear diff looked very old. didn't stop them from charging me to change it!

hey angryru - i think i found my issue.
thanks to a lot of good info on the pradopoint forum. I got some good fuchs grease from ARB, and used a grease gun to pump new stuff into the prop shaft grease nipples (about 3 in all), pushing out all the old stuff. looks like its fixed the issue 100%!! if you need some more info, let me know.

Hi All,

I appear to have this issue. Does anyone have recent experince with Toyota on this.

It is a known fault with the FJ and a TSB has issued advising replacement of tail shaft.

Hi all,

Having the same problem here with my South Africa built Hilux. So far, they have replaced the torque converter and the rear prop shaft. No change with the new torque converter and a 80% improvement with the new rear prop.

Did they try a grease first. Has the problem come back.

Hello Angus.

They tried to grease the shaft first, then changed the torque conveter, then changed the prop. Only after chaging the prop was there an 'improvement' but not a solution. Looking at the prop, even though there is aonly 4000Km, it is looking a little dry so I am going to ahve it regreased.

Mine does this from time to time, especially if I've come to quite a heavy stop from high speed (a red light say).

Always sort of thought it's normal, it's not bad, just a mild thunk .. and very intermittent. So much so there's no way Toyota would blink at it let alone replace anything.

My mate who used to build race autos and torque converters and other racecar parts seemed to think a bit of slack in the driveline in a 4wd is basically normal.

Also make sure you grease all the nipples every 5k, there's like 6 of them under the car. (i have 8 i think... as my leaf spring shackles are also greaseable).

Well after reading this post, I went out and bought the required tools for the job. Just finished greasing the tail shafts and uni joints, and wouldn't you bloody know it, it's fixed the jolt! Two years I've been driving around waiting for my diff or gearbox to fail thinking it was one of them, and it was nothing more than a decent grease up!! Thanks fellas.

ha goes to show whoever has been servicing your car hasn't been doing so properly!!

Especially on a 4wd that stuff is important.

Wasn't you was it ? :) :D
