Replacement Horn.

Postby mitchnewy on Sat, 04 Mar 2017 6:06 +0000

Hi,

I'm looking to upgrade the standard single horn in my 2016 SR5 - I'm looking at the Hella Black Twin tone horn - it gives a sound like the European cars. Has anyone installed replacement dual horns in a Gen8 yet?

Apparently the Fortuner comes with dual "premium" Toyota/Denso horns. I'm hoping there is already a spare wire there for a second horn and then I just change the relay?

Any help is appreciated.

Why change the relay? Horns don't draw a great deal and IF there is a relay for the existing horn I would be surprised if it cant handle the current of a second horn.

Hi - So I've taken the cover off this morning. There is actually two horns. It seems like I just need to:
1. Replace the horns positioned in same existing location positions.
2. Run earth wires from each new horn to the horn mount on the car frame.
3. Connect the existing single positive connector to the new horn via a new connector.

Anyone else have any advice they can offer?

Check the fuse, if its a 10amp then you will need to put in new wiring and relay. The twin tone will draw about 12A (2x72w).

Sharp tones draw the same as factory (2x44w). Super tones draw a bit more (2x66w). I replaced mine (gen7) with sharp tones, pretty much a straight bolt on just had to make new connectors.

I installed a Stebel Nautilus Compact (12volt Car 139dB) using their Plug-N-Play Stebel Nautilus Horn Relay Wiring Kit. It was really quite easy and as suggested in other threads (Horny Stuff), I only unplugged one of the two horns when connecting it up. This allows you to do a quick push on the steering wheel for a little toot and if needed, hold down for the full blown horn.

Can add some pictures if needed just let me know.

I've got to ask, why install a different horn? I just don't get it.
